Hey, you're the Hill Crusher. I'm just another gosling. I don't know about the rest of the folks here, but I don't feel adequate to advise.

I don't feel like going to that site and trying to find the ride description.
If you want people to take the time to reply you need to make it easy for them. And asking a specific question would be good too.

I went and looked and this is what it said:
"The Tour de Gaps is a challenging charity bicycle ride which starts in the foothills town of Mt. Airy, NC. The scenic ride takes the rider up four separate gap roads, each of which climbs from the foothills valley floor up to the spine of the Blue Ridge Parkway. You climb up the gap road and return back down the same road to the rolling terrain of the foothills. We guarantee this to be one of the toughest rides that you will grow to love! We will provide great support so that you can suffer in "relative" comfort!"
And I still have no idea really about it.
Ask a specific question about it or there isn't really anything anyone can say.

It's impossible for anyone to give you useful advice because we have no idea of your current state of fitness or what your goals are for the ride. I could do the ride tomorrow and have fun, maybe you could too. Or maybe you're just beginning need to start base building.
One starting point would be to read Friel's Training Bible. That would give you some good training ideas.

How would i need to train for steep climbing and long distance?is that specific enough??
4 different mountain climbs doesn't tell me anything still. The elevation profile on the site had no scale. how far is the ride? How high are the climbs? What is steep? What is your current fitness? What are your strengths? Weaknsses? You aren't giving us much to work with here.

82 miles with 9000' of climbing is a decent ride. Remember that the climbing will make the ride slower, so it'll take longer than a normal 82 mile ride.
If you haven't spent that much time in the saddle before, or done that much climbing, you need to work on your endurance. Do a long ride each week, making them longer by no more than 10% a week.
You'll also want to work on your climbing. You can do shorter climbing rides during the week, but also get in some long rides with significant climbing on weekends. For those you should go at a comfortable endurance pace. Save hammering the hills for the short climbing rides. Try to find longer climbs, at least 1200-1500' elevation gain, to get used to pacing yourself up climbs that length.
If you train with heart rate pay attention on the long endurance rides and figure out what sort of HR you can maintain for a long ride. Then for the event set a strict limit for the first couple climbs at least. That's so you don't go too hard trying to keep up with faster climbers only to burn out later.
Bring low gears to the event. Lower than you think you will need.

Just my two cents but I would figure NC in August may be a tad warm. I have issues with overheating so i try to acclimate as much as possible. I also have to remember not to drink so much that I flush out all my salts and minerals.
