I am riding from Charleston, SC up to New Jersey via the Outer Banks. I'd like to visit Williamsburg, while I am in the area.
It appears there are two ways to get there from the Outer Banks. One is to ride north through the area around Norfolk, which looks to be highly urban with lots of major highways and water to cross. The second is to ride south and west around the Norfolk area. The problem with doing this is the Great Dismal Swamp (GDS) that appears on Google maps to be roadless.
Going below the GDS appears to be the best solution but the road in that area appear to be shoulderless 2-lane highways, such as highway 158. The ACA uses 158 to get around the GDS.
Has anyone ridden in this area or on 158?
Thanks,
Ray
