I've seen two women flip the leg gripper portion of their PI cycling shorts recently and I'm wondering if this is the start of a new trend, If so, why? In case my description is not clear, by "flipping" I mean that they rolled the very last 1/2 inch (just the rubber gripper portion of the short) over to expose the lettering underneath.

probably cuz the gripper is uncomfortable on their skin?

I have always flipped mine up. I have a short inseam, and all bike shorts seem to be just too long. Roll it up, and they seem to fit just right.

Sounds to me like your shorts are too long.

I've seen many ladies (and one guy) fold the gripper over so it is on the outside. I guess it's a comfort thing for them.

Ah, to flip or not to flip?

My Pearlizumi's actually have their logo banded around the inside so if one flips, the company exposure expands some tenfold.

My bike shorts are too short!! I don't flip it at all, my legs just look so long.... lol... maybe because I'm more lanky. Anyway, I don't flip the gripper on my legs, but I do for those on my waist.

I never thought about this until I started shaving. WHen I had hairy legs, the leg gripper didn't bother me at all. Now, the damn thing drive sme nuts. So, I say flip it!

also the gripper can be uncomfortably if you have a bit of sunburn.

I flip mine when I wear leg warmers. It helps them stay up.

I have been a flipper for over a year. I like the look plus it raises my tan lines a bit.

I hate the gripper. I don't have stick-like legs. I'm on the lookout for un-gripped shorts!

I don't have a "gripper" for my waist. I wear bibs. :D

I'm a guy & I have a tendency to develop a rash around my leg grippers when I go on rides longer than 3 hours & it's hot. A LBS employee suggested I flip mine to avoid it. Bodyglide also helps but sometimes I forget it.

Is the gripper actually necessary? I'm looking at a pair of tri shorts that lacks a leg gripper. The Sugoi Piston Tri shorts to be precise.

Depending on the shorts, the grippers can be quite uncomfortable and they do leave a nasty red rash-like mark around my thigh sometimes. Never thought about flipping it up. Will have to see if it helps.

When wearing leg warmers, they can be quite handy for keeping the warmers up, especially if *they* don't have grippers on them.

When the shorts lose a bit of their snugness, they can start riding up the leg with scrunchy concequences around the crotch.

Who says there is no such thing as reincarnation?!?

FWIW in the old days no shorts had grippers, and we LIKED it like that. (think SNL skit)

+1

I'm allergic to elastic, and the gripper can cause a rash. It's also why I often wear my leg warmers over my shorts rather than under.

Odd, I don't flip mine when I wear leg warmers for the same reason. (Leaving them un-flipped keeps my leg warmers up better.)
