Once upon a time, I posted a thread about how Led Zeppelin ripped off less fortunate musicians by taking credit for their work. Unfortunately, it was mistaken for a parody thread and merged with a couch_incident thread and lost forever to the abyss.
That said, years ago I had made the mistake of buying Physical Graffiti on Cassette instead of vinyl. I listened to it so much that I began to wear out the tape. Then the cassette housing wore out. So I took the tape out of a new blank tape and put the Led Zeppelin reels in it.

Interestingly, I was in Midtown at a beading store with the GF this afternoon and some Led Zep song, a "slow blues" with Plant screeching was on the speakers. Ugh. Page is such a horribly bad, sloppy, and un-inventive guitar player. LZ is a case, just like the Stones, Beatles, Aerosmith, of a band manufactured by corps to make money. Its shocking how I can on a given Friday or Saturday night find a cover band around here with FAR better musicians playing in it than any of the idiots that played in those bands.

someone completely misses the point of bands like LZ, Aerosmith, and the Beatles. They may not have been the best musicians, but they changed the face of music....Elvis Presley is the same way....no Elvis what would be on the radio? Patsy Cline?

When you're talking Zep, you HAVE to talk about The Song Remains The Same, that oh-so-visceral concert that I saw in theater, and now have again on my mp3.
Studio albums leave a lot to be desired with these guys.
That said, Heart put out a live album a little while back that covered some Zep songs, and outdid TSRTS. But then, I'd listen to Ann Wilson for a month before I'd listen to Plant for four hours. Thankfully, there's a lot of good instrumental on TSRTS.
Can't say I'm a follower of any group or band, though; like some here, some there; anything from War to Nightwish and Halestorm will get my attention if the song is any good.
Glad some of you like that tune. I wrote it.:innocent:

LZ is so overplayed that there are few songs I can listen to anymore. Fool in the Rain, The Song Remains the Same, and that's about it. As for dubbing The Beatles corporate manufacturing, that's just nutty. They did suffer from having a producer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Martin), but that's the worst you can say about them in that regard.
Here's a great drums-only clip of John Bonham laying down the awesome Fool in the Rain shuffle.

One of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs is the extended version of No Quarter on that album. Bonzo's drum solo, "Moby Dick" is great as well. I like all their albums, but my current faves are:
- In Through The Out Door
- Led Zeppelin
- The Song Remains The Same

When someone allows their music to be used to shill Cadillacs, they lose the right to be considered serious musicians.
But even apart from that, LZ have been played to death.

Castle upkeep is expensive. Gotta pay the bills just like everyone else. (though why anyone as rich as them should ever have bills, I guess I'll never know) Page has been considered a "serious" musician for so many decades now, I'm sure he's not too worried about the opinions of a few foosters. :p And have you ever given any thought as to why they're played to death? ;)

No argument with anything you're saying. But as someone who used to love Led Zeppelin, it's hard for me not to be bitter about what they've become. They're wealthy beyond the dreams of avarice but it's still not enough. OK fine, but Cadillacs?
And I think the reason they're played to death is fairly obvious. Radio, at least in America, is now controlled by a small handful of corporations, who use opinion polls to determine their playlists. The opinion polls obtain data from people my age who are for the most part, set in their ways and happy hearing the exact same music they've been listening to for the last 30+ years.
So, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, The Eagles, Pink Floyd and a few other dinosaurs get endless airplay, while new, imaginative, or innovative musicians seek other outlets to distribute their work. I give Corporate Radio a few more years before it goes the way of the gramophone.

Wasn't it Grace Slick who said "I think old people look rediculous on a rock and roll stage, and yes...that includes the Rolling Stones"(and this was back in the late eighties.) I happen to agree with her believe it or not. I also agree these bands are nothing really compared to what they used to be. But to say that their original stuff is "lame" and that you've seen better around town every weekend is a bit ludicrous. I also agree that public radios days are numbered. I have to say that I'm a bit surprised that Floyd is fighting having their songs sold individually on Napster etc. In fact they just won in court yesterday I think. They're going to lose out, big time. Perhaps they can afford to...

My friends' band, which I've pimped elsewhere on this forum, do a cool version of "Kashmir" live - half in English, half in Hindi. You can hear it on their MySpace (ugh...) page: http://www.myspace.com/manooghihi.
Thanks to mike047 for shouting out "Battle of Evermore." Anything that gives more attention to Sandy Denny (my favorite female vocalist) is fine by me!
And as for Zep ripping off other artists - usually I give them a pass, pretty much, but certain infractions are too blatant to be forgiven. Consider that they took songwriting credit for "Dazed and Confused," when this version predated their by years: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTsvs-pAGDc. Hell, even the Yardbirds did it, so there's no way Zep should have claimed it as their own!

Lots of bands have taken credit for others songs. One of the funniest I ever saw was Deep Purple doing so for "Hey Joe". Zep did a lot of Yardbirds material in the beginning, which was only natural, since their very existence was the result of that bands breakup.

Don't confuse covering a song with recording someone else's song and claiming you wrote it. Deep purple did not take credit, they merely covered it.

Incorrect. It is because of the success of said bands that the corporate suits created other bands to make money. LZ changed the rules on record companies. They owned all their stuff and got a much bigger slice of the pie than ever before.

I did not know the story but knew that the reissue had corrected the credit. Never owned a copy of Shades, but an older cousin had an original copy. Saw the credit and mentioned it to my cousin who had never noticed it. His wife of course who knew nothing about rock blurted out that Hendrix had penned it. We just looked at each other and busted up, much to her confusion.

I can't speak for bluevelo, but my critique consists of a horrified shudder. Having gone to high school in the 70's, I would like very much to never have to hear EWF again. As Miles Davis said of Spyro Gyra, "those cats couldn't swing if you hung 'em."
