Salmonellas not problem unless the person keeping the turtle is a slob, a turtle tank must be kept very clean, which means a filter and weekly to biweekly partial water changes, and a true turtle needs a basking area where it can get its body totally dry (to prevent shell rot) when it needs to, not one of those piece of crap "Turtle Islands" that pet shops sell, and they also need vitamins and minerals added to their food at least once a month, and while we're on the subject of food I'll go ahead and say that the prepared turtle food you buy at the pet shop is total crap and will just help speed up the little guys death, a true water turtle needs fresh greens and meats on a daily basis usually in the form of fresh fish and earthworms to stay healthy (I'm sure the OP knows the differance between the two) as does any other turtle or tortoise, what I'm saying is this: if you couldn't keep fish alive I suggest you don't get a turtle.

Nah, he will not be getting anywhere near the amount of meat she uses, not out of the common Red Ear Sliders that are sold at 99% of the pet shops, this is more than likely what she used, a great big Louisiana Alligator Snapper!

that's not affection... that's conditioning... they want you to feed them...

a tortoise will come to you when you call them and sleeps with his head rested on your leg... they love getting their necks scratched and head's touched... and they do live 50+ years...

Heres the setup I kept my Red Ear Slider in when it was a baby, he moved up to larger setups but eventually was set free, as you can see he shared the setup with a Treefrog.

Of course it my not be wisdom that I see there. He may just be satisfied he's not living in some damn tree trying to scratch out a living and avoiding getting eaten by a crow.

We have a red ear slider and a sawback in a 40 gallon tank. I'm told it's not big enough, but by the standards I've read, we would need a 100 gallon tank, and I have no idea where I would put that. They seem fine so far, but I cannot keep the damn thing clean. I have a Zoo Med 100, but it clogs and stops working pretty quick. I think I may just plop another Zoo Med 100 in there, and if that doesn't work, add a 3rd, haha. Maybe connect them in a series, and have each pump/filter have the different filter mediums?

I try to change the water weekly, but it's a freakin' hassle. How do people normally change the water out?

Here's the best way I've figured out so far:
remove screen, open window
attach garden hose to spigot in yard, yell at son to come to window
hand him the hose, instruct to place in tank
turn on water, instruct him to holler when water comes out
immediately turn off water, and remove from spigot
this siphons the water and debris out
re-attach hose to spigot, fill up tank
close window, replace screen

However, I'm not sure what to do when the spigot water is much colder than usual. Hold cold is too cold? I figured it would be shock if they're used to hanging out in 72F water, and I dump in something considerably colder.

all this ^^^^ tells me you know nothing about water turtles, not wise to use faucet water as it contains all kinds of chemical crap that will hurt your critters, know how your eyes feel when you get into a pool with chlorine in it? well think of that feeling lasting at least three days! and you may want to get a submersible heater to at least get the water temp up to what it was, and oh yeah, invest in a REAL filter, you will need a canister filter for at least an 80 or 100 gallon tank as turtles poop.... alot! and it make a mess that seems almost uncontrolable to some, a large canister filter will help you deal with keeping the water clean. :thumb:

The local community college stopped offering the "water turtles and you" class. Feel free to educate me!

So what am I to do? Buy 40 gallons of distilled water every week at $1 a piece? I can't afford $40 a week on water. Wife hasn't let me build a still yet ("it's only for water, honest!").

Any recommendations on the filter? I haven't seen anything like that at Petsmart, all their crap is for fish, and not really any big filtering thingies.

Right now they just have a floating "dock", and a heat lamp. Do they really need anything else? They've been fine so far, for the last couple years (I forget how long we've had them, the RES is at least 4 years old, sawback is younger).

http://www.redearslider.com/

This site has everything that they you would need.

A few quick things, for the water, just use normal water but treat it.
A fishFilter would be ok. I just cleans the water. The turtle stuff at most places is not good for turtles.

No, you buy a canister filter (just google "aquarium canister filters" and choose one thats recommended for a 100G tank) and enough chlorine neutralizer to treat 100G's of water, that way you have enough for future partial water changes, then you redo the whole tank, clean everything, fill with tap water, add enough chlorine neutralizer to treat 40G's of tap water, then add the filter and turtles, after the filters up and running for about two weeks you can change half the water in the tank with treated tap water and do so every two weeks after that, your turtles will be a lot happier and so will you as you will only have to change the filtering medium about once a month and will never have to change all of the water again. =0) Good luck. BTW, I forgot to mention, who ever told you it would be cheap to keep any animal? I say this in response to the above highlighted area.

$40/week is too much for any animal! I already have 2 dogs and a cat (3 dogs up till last week :(, chihuahua got squished), and none of them cost that!

Thanks for the helpful info! I'll start looking for the 100 gal canister filter.

I spend $80.00 a month on dog food, thats not counting vet bills and what they add to the water bill (baths ever three days for three dogs) and thats not counting what we spend on seven cats every month, thats why you need to know what you get into before you get into it. ;)

Your welcome and good luck. :)

Big whooptie do!

Four bags of dog food a month at $45 per bag, two bags of cat food (prescription) at $50 per bag, Eight mice a week at $4 each mouse, And a huge shovel to clean the after affects. Plus regular vet bills such as shots, teeth cleaning, etc. Cage litter and electricity for the heat lamp for the snakes, jugs of cat litter too. Plus those dang pizzle sticks. Gross.

And the fish tank.

Oh and the gecko.
