How can I swap out my 6 speed freewheel to another freewheel to obtain higher gearing. I'm looking for a 12 or 11 tooth rear gear. What is necessary? What is available?

How can I swap out my 6 speed freewheel to another freewheel to obtain higher gearing. I'm looking for a 12 or 11 tooth rear gear. What is necessary? What is available?There are Sram 7 speed freewheels available with a 12 cog,Regina use to make a 12.Don't know that I have ever seen an 11. You can also checK loosescrews, Harriscyclery or ebay. You will need the proper tool to remove the old one.

SRAM has a 12 tooth cog listed, but it's top threaded and not in the 6-speed freewheel section. My suspicion is that you're going to be out of luck unless you also make some other modifications. Once you commit yourself to doing that, you might as well change over to a cassette rear hub.

shimano makes an 11-34 7 speed freewheel, but the lowest gear will probably be useless unless you switch out your rear derailleur. unless you have a good quality freewheel-wheel, you might be better doing a cassette hub as RG suggests.

what do people have against their knees these days...One could suspect that a rider that wants an 11 or 12 for higher gearing would have little use for a 34.

Unless you have a 120mm rear axle and an "ultra" 6-speed, you can probably substitute a 7-speed freewheel. I think 12 teeth is the smallest cog you can get without a cassette. Of course, another way to get higher gearing is with a larger outer chaining, but you would need another 5 teeth on the chainring to approximate the ratiometric change of going from 13 teeth to 12.
Personally, I have no use for any gear much over 100 gear-inches. The highest gear on any of my bikes is 50/13 = 104 gear-inches, on the Bianchi.
