Rookie question...Other than the difficulty in finding alternate chainrings for a shimano road triple crankset (yes, I understand, see Peter White Cycles)... is there much involved in swapping out said chainrings?


Suppose you are going from a 53/43/30 (whatever) to a 48/38/26:

1) I imagine the front deraileur would have to be lowered on the seatpost?

2) Does the chain need to be shortened?

3) What other adjustments?

Really, I guess I'd just like to be pointed to a "primer" on doing crankset/chainring
changes.

Thanks 1) yes 2) probably 3) lowering the derailer will require loosening and reattaching the FD cable and readjusting. The road FD cage curvature won't be ideal for that ring combination, but will probably still work. I used a 105 9 speed triple FD on a 46/36/26 crank with no issues.

Check the specs on your front derailler to make sure it can handle the new range in chainrings.

Check the specs on your front derailler to make sure it can handle the new range in chainrings.He said Shimano road triple. Therefore the answer is no problem. Even the long gone RSX FD designed for a 46/36/26 would handle it.I won't get into ancient history with pre STI stuff.

It would help if the new mid and large CW are ramped and pinned. They probably
will be, but it is not a given for the mid. Steve
