Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - 6'5" 220lb guy buying first bike!

Hey guys!

I'm a pretty big guy, 6'5" 220lbs, and I'm looking to buy my first used bike, probably off of craig's list.

I think I've got it down that I'm going to buy a Hybrid bike, as I live in Boston and am trying to use it to commute/exercise. Do you guys have any tips/hints for what I should be looking for in terms of size on Craigs list? While I know I should ride it and check it out, I don't want to waste my time looking at bikes that are going to be waay too small!

6 Ft here and ride a 60cm.
Anything under 62cm would be to small.

what is your inseam measurement? I have had good luck finder some older steel bikes on CL.. If you get into cycling you will outgrow the hybrid very quickly.. I would look at getting a steel or thicker tubed alum. frame like a Cannondale.. Both will be plenty stiff for you.. 6'3 here and ride 60-61cm frame.. my inseam in 34"

I picked this one because I'm your size. Under 62cm is almost certainly too small, and 67 is probably too tall. I'd guess 65 is about perfect, but rare. You'll probably find 63 or 64 much more often. You'll have to ride it to know, like you said. Good luck.

Thanks for your help! I emailed the guy with the T400 cannondale to see if I could go out and ride it.

I'd say my ma price would probably be around $500...preferably less, but if I can get a good bike that'll last be a couple years, I don't really mind.

Check your inseam length. I don't recall mine at the moment, maybe it's small, but I'm 6'5" and my 64 cm bike is definitely too big for me. A 61-62 cm frame is just about right.

Plus, for us tall guys it's natural to have more saddle to handlebar drop than for most people. Just FYI.

I guess Spring is on the way! The nice weather coming up in Boston kinda rekindled my want for a bike!

I'm 6'4 235. I have a long torso and ride a 61cm road bike (or did until I got hit today). Even at that size I have a laid-back post & decent-sized neck. I started out on a hyrbrid & ended up on a road bike & an older mountain bike. Go ride each type before making the decision. As far as used goes, I'd say the newer the better (mainly from a component standpoint) but within reason. My other piece of advice is to make sure your wheels will be beefy enough for you. I've torn up a couple rear 700c's, but have had no problems with my MTB wheels.

I am 6'4" and I prefer bikes in the 62 - 64 cm range... the way hybrids are measured it would probably be about a 22 or 24" frame. Definitely the XL size made by any manufacturer. Getting abike that fits, hybrid, mtb, or road, is the most important thing. Shop around until you find one you are comfortable on.

those older cannondale alum frames are super stiff,decent deal for the bike as long as there are no dings or dents..

I'm 6' 4", 250 with a 32" inseam. I have a 1989 Cannondale 3.0, 63 cm frame. I bought that based off a custom built bike that I had.

go with a cannondale. thats wut i have i'm 6'4" 260 i ride a 60cm maybe you will need a 63cm it all depends on ur inseam. hope you got your bike already.
