Southern California - Owens Valley Death Ride

That. Is awesome. I will add that to my list of very fun things to do, no joke. Won't be able to join you though, sorry.

I've tried twice to do all 3 and never managed it. I plan to try again this year, but it will probably be later in the year. Those climbs are like nothing you've never done, stacking all 3 and riding between them is insane and, that's coming from me.

Also, my advice is to start really early in the morning before it gets light, and go in the opposite direction. Horseshoe Meadows is completely exposed and it will be very very hot by the time you get there.

umd- let me know when you are going to make an attempt. I'll join. I think it could be doable for me. I did 15k ft in the French Alps on one day last summer (which included 6k ft of climbing on Col du Galibier with 50-75mph headwinds for the last 10km and 3.5k ft of climbing on Alpe d'Huez).

On paper it seems like it shouldn't be much different than Everest Challenge, but for some reason it was. I think it didn't help that I was staying in Mammoth and had to drive out to it for 2 hours beforehand.

Ben, it depends on when kuf's family rents their condo in Mammoth. This year though I plan to stay the first night in Lone Pine and attack it early in the morning instead of driving down from Mammoth first. I'll let you know when we are going, but I probably won't know until it gets much closer. It's usually late July/early August.

I've done all three of those climbs. Truely an epic challenge to do all of them in the same day. I would think you would need support since it will probably be hot as hell after about 10am. I would do Horseshoe first, that is a real brute and about twice as long as the other two, then catch Whitney Portal on the way down. If you head up W.P. from where Horseshoe road meets it that cuts off a few miles. Maybe you could do Onion Valley in the evening when things have cooled down some. Good luck

Bob is right .. Horseshoe is probably one of the best climbs in the USA.. and the short cut to Whitney makes sense as it removes some of the more boring part of that climb out. That sounds like a lot of climbing. These mountains it should be noted are a LOT taller than the Alp's.

That looks like a grunt, but should be doable. Hot, but doable. Have you scoped out access to water on the route?

When in June do you intend to do it? The Eastern Sierra Double is the 5th, the Alta Alpina Challenge the 12th and the Grand Tour the 26th.

I'd be interested, but probably not in June.
