So, I love my frame. I got it for free, as it was cracked, and my friend replaced the chainstays and added a disc mount. It's an older Black Sheep steel frame, and about the biggest tire I can fit in there is a 2.1 or so. I'm really looking for a hardtail that I can fit like a 2.5 inch tire in, disc for sure. I've been looking at the Surly Instigator, but it's really overbuilt for what I want to do with it. My old singlespeed frame had the tire clearance, but it was a singlespeed, and wasn't set up for the shifty bits.

Anybody got recommendations?

The Salsa El Mariachi complete bike comes with 2.55 tires. It also has an EBB so you can run it geared or ss if you choose.

I would love something like that, but my legs are so short that any production 29er that fits when I'm in the saddle is so tall I can't stand over it. I should have specified 26".

on-one inbred, ragley blue pig.

You won't find many light-weight hard-tail frame designed for large tires since a frame which can accommodate larger tires is designed for abusive riding.
