Mountain Biking - Kona Dawg 2008 vs Specialized FSRxc Expert 2009

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
The LBS near my house has the Kona Dawg 2008 and the Specialized FSRxc Expert 2009 on sale at pretty much the same price point.
I'm seriously undecided which one to go with, both ride quite well, although I'm no expert in this.
My priorities are good climbing ability and a plush ride.
Any suggestions on which one I should give a new home to?

Both are solid bikes. Which one fits better?

Honestly, really hard to tell. I've spent a lot of time on my roadie so I,m not sure what it's supposed to feel like.
Ah! forgot to check out the frame warranty, that will probably decide it for me.
I'll be back...

Ok, both are lifetime warranty.
Color would be next I guess?
The FSR has the better suspension design...and having lots of saddle time on the Kona faux-bar (Coiler, Dawg) and some on the Specialized FSR suspension (Enduro, Stumpjumper), I'd pick the Specialized.

Which FEELS better when you take them both out to the same place?

The FSR feels slightly better, but hard to tell, they're both great rides.
I was also wondering about componentry between them. So far they seem to be pretty neck-in-neck.

If you are not sure, take them out again. Just remember that this is something that you are going to have to be comfortable on. If it's not, you won't ride it, no matter what the components are. Good luck.

Very good point. Thanks.
I have purchased several specialized bikes and have had no regrets...absolutely none. Now when I was deciding my bike purchase i rode the Kona that was at the same price point and componetry as the specialized stumpjumper and I liked the stumpy hands down. Stumpjumper is the step up from the FSR models. However, bike perferences are very personalized and you should go back in ride both, focusing on what characteristics you like on each one and then determine the priority of those characteristics...that should help you make the decision. Good luck...from what i have read both bikes are good and you will enjoy.
Thanks folks for your feedback. :thumb:
