Has anyone had garmin electronics shipped up from the states, and if so, were duties charged on arrival?

If you use USPS/Canada Post, standard taxes apply, plus a 5 dollar processing fee. If you use UPS, a significant brokerage fee is charged on top of the taxes. You can find the values here.

On top of this, UPS adds other arbitrary fees. Needless to say, never use UPS. I've ended up paying fees equal to 50% the cost of my goods. Unfortunately some US sellers only ship via UPS. Take your business elsewhere.

I always get stuff shipped USPS ( post ) All the courier companies sting you with brokerage charges, unless, you go expedited. ( check that ) There will probably be duties on a Garmin, unless it's made in USA and qualifies for Free Trade Agreement loophole.

I got my Garmin Edge 500 with HR and Cadence sensor from Wiggle (UK) a week ago... 290 CAD, no shipping, no taxes, no duties. I might have just been lucky but I will try Wiggle again in the future for bicycle parts/accessories. I got the item 1 week after I ordered it online.

The courier did not even bother ringing the bell... just left the package near the door behind a welcome home sign. So far no notices from any bill collector yet. I usually buy from biketiresdirect using the USPS option but Wiggle was selling the Garmins at a much lower price so I decided to try them out.

The no tax thing has happened to me as well. Sometimes stuff slips through. Just a few weeks ago I bought a $300 tent from REI and had it shipped to Australia, where I'm temporarily working. It was shipped with Fedex air and I paid no taxes. I just provided an Australian example, but this occurs in Canada as well.
