Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - First conversion; opinions on Sugino GS crankset?

First off, hello everyone! (Relatively) long time cyclist, first time posting.

I've been trying to decide on a crankset. First I was thinking about RDs, then SRAM Omnium and had a brief look at Sugino XDs. I was pretty set on the Omniums, but o make matters more complicated, yesterday I came across a Wanted Ad for a Super Maxy set (what I ride) with 170 arms (what they are). I emailed him with a trade proposal. He doesn't have what I was looking for, but he does have a Sugino GS crankset.

I couldn't find too much info on that particular model, but I think they're 144 bcd. Does anyone have any other info on them? Personal experiences? Any reasons why they wouldn't be a good candidate for a fixed gear conversion?

I know there's a big gap as far as cost/quality between the Omniums and GS. I do a fair amount of riding, mostly for fun/transportation, maybe 75 miles/week average, more when the weather cooperates. Am I going to see a benefit from the SRAM external bearing? Because aesthetically I'm leaning towards the GS. And obviously the wallet will enjoy the swap.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Best Regards,
Tim

cranks really aren't that important for urban riding/commuting. Omniums are probably the best track cranks you can get as far as stiffness goes, but it won't really matter unless you're competing at the track. Just do the swap.

Having said that, I've never heard of GS cranks. Are you sure they are track cranks w/ 144bcd?

It's a road double, but I found a mention here: http://www.bikeforums.net/archive/index.php/t-261290.html (http://www.bikeforums.net/archive/index.php/t-261290.html)of it being 144.

Here's a Cannondale SR300 that came from the factory with them. http://backroom.hardsdisk.net/sr300.html

Thanks!

One more on the subject, for the time being at least.

Am I silly for not just using the Sugino Super Maxy crank that I'm currently running? I wanted to keep that bike complete because it's the only rig I have road ready, though as I look deeper I have an older Sugino Maxy crank that I could swap over to keep the Lotus (Super Maxy donor) spinning.

I realize a lot of this is personal preference so i guess my actual question is, what would be your personal preference?
