Road Cycling - Turning Roubaix into family cruiser.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I turn 40 next year and have decided to get a "nice" ride in honor of the occasion. I currently own a Fuji Roubaix which is nice, but I'd really like to move it up a few notches to say - something Italian. :D

I also have a 84' Specialized Stump Jumper, which doubles as a boat anchor! I have a three year old and when we go out as a family I ride the "beast" and tow the trailer... It's a nice workout.
Yesterday I attached the trailer to my road bike and was very surprised at how much easier it was to pull.

What I think I might do is turn my Fuji into a family outing bike - Take off my Ksyriums and put the stock wheels back on - some wider tires - loose the Selle Itialia saddle for something a little more comfortable and perhaps change out the drops for one of these straight bars - throw on a mud flap/rack... etc.

My question is - is the direction I'm going worth it, or should I sell the Fuji and just buy a hybrid - and can I actually get wider tires to fit with my 105 brakes.

I probably will never do "off road" riding, but there are a couple of local bike paths that actually are dirt or crushed gravel that I'd like to get on... do I have a concern about a road bike standing up to the abuse or a family ride?

And as always - recomendations on the dream ride are always welcome.

Richard28 is likely the widest tires, and some of them may not even work.

I have a Fuji Hybrid, which I got for exactly that reason -- to be able to do both road trails and gravel/foot paths -- on my third ride I got a bad flat, and when I took it back to the store the guy said that I had street tires on it. So I guess a hybrid with road bike tires isn't really any better -- I would suggest getting nice and thick tires

other than that, the fuji hybrid is great
