Just wondering which bike would be better for someone just starting out. They both run about the same price and are similarly spec'd out. I couldn't find info on bottom bracket height on the Salsa. Thanks.

I don't think you could go wrong with either one.
The Salsa spec on the crankset says it's got a 46-36 FSA Gossamer, but it also lists 46-38 Rival chainrings, which makes no sense. If it's got the Gossamer, it will have FSA's MegaExo bottom bracket. The SRAM GXP bottom bracket on the Presidio is about the same thing.
I like the geometry better on the Presidio (just looking at the numbers), but I like the scandium frame and the Alpha Q fork on the Salsa. I also think the Salsa's better looking.
I'd probably get the Salsa. They both cost twice what my bike did.

BB drop on the Salsa is 65mm for most of the sizes and 68 for the smaller ones... The Fisher is 64 to 60mm... a lower drop will mean a lower bb...
The Salsa looks to have a higher bb, which is classically euro or east coast due to the rocky/rooty terrain.. I think a higher bb will be a bit "quicker" to maneuver...

For me, the sliding dropouts on the gf is what does it for me. I'm also a big fan of steel despite the weight difference. from what i've seen, a lightweight set of wheels on a steel frame and it will 'ride as light' as an alum or carbon bike.

Actually, I think you have that backward. A bigger number in BB drop will mean a lower bottom bracket. The Fisher site list both BB drop and BB height, so you can see this. The Presidio has a higher bottom bracket than the Chili Con Crosso.

yes, the bb drop is how much lower the bb is than the rear dropout or wheel center, so the Fisher is indeed a higher bb than the Salsa... (not sure what I was looking at)
lower bb's seem to be the way many cross bikes are going since most courses aren't full of rocks or roots as they once were and a lower bb will give you a more stable ride... that's why road bikes will have a lower bb than any true cross bike...
