Commuting - Axiom Journey rack and Cartier pannier review

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have started to ride my cx bike to school and around for errands so I wanted to get a set of panniers and a rear rack. I figured the more convenient the bike was to use, the more often I'd use it. I looked around online for reviews and suggestions, as well as checking out stuff at my local PB. PB didn't have too much, the standard basic rack and some bags. Enough to realize that heal strike was going to be an issue. Once I got oriented at what I wanted and needed I found an older online review of the Axiom rack and panniers. I found them pretty reasonable online (modernbike.com for $92 shipped, btw they were very fast 3 days from order to my door and I got an email with the Fedex tracking # as soon as they shipped).

The Journey rack seemed to sit farther back than some others, and the bags where the size I wanted and had a heal cutout.

There's not much else to say, the rack is nice, bolted right up with no problems, sturdy. The bags are perfect for my needs. They have a couple of little pockets and I like the elastic cord on top to stash stuff quickly. They are reinforced with a plastic panel inside and go on/off very easily. The bags look a little droopy in the pics since they are empty and new, to be expected I think. Time will tell how they hold up but my initial impressions are that they're sturdy, zippers work smoothly. I like the reflective bits on the back and sides. My shoe in the pic is clipped in and is a size 13/46, no problems at all for clearance.

I couldn't find any photos online except for the standard manufacturer ones so I wanted to get some user photo's out there, maybe it'll help someone visualize these things better.

I've been thinking about getting that rack.

I do have a question about the panniers, though: according to the modernbike site, these bags come as a set. Are they two individual bags that attach separately or are they the saddlebag type that are connected by fabric?

I have an Axiom rack and panniers myself (not what you've gotten) and I like it very much. Never had a problem with either though I haven't used the panniers much yet.

And to no1mad I believe the panniers are not connected. Rather they have a snap on button you can use to connect them (at least mine do).

I've been using the rack for over a year on my Sputnik. Very sturdy - never had to adjust or tighten it. I alternate between Sunlite top bag or panniers depending on the need. Cheap bags but they work ok.

I got that rack for my roadie. Compared to the generic rack on my commuter, I think I much prefer the way it mounts.

They are two separate bags. Each has a handle that has a snap to connect them together if you want. Look at a couple of the pics closely and you can see the snaps.

I have the LaSalle panniers and the Journey rack on one of my bikes. Axiom is a Canadian company that makes good products. I've never had a problem with their stuff.

sorry to revive a thread, but how much can you fit in one of them? I'm thinking about buying the Axiom Mackenzie, which is basically the same thing, except a single pannier w/ shoulder strap minus the extra pocket and bungee cord top. But they are based on the same design. So, can you fit a pair of shoes on one side plus a change of clothes?

Thanks very much for your pics they are awesome!

I'm glad you did revive this thread. The pictures help me a lot, as this is one of the racks I've been thinking of getting.

When I was searching earlier I must have used the wrong terms, because I missed this entirely.

You can fit a pair of running shoes (or cycling shoes) and a pair of shorts and t shirt in one Cartier bag, not much else.
