Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Zero financial advantage, very high satisfaction factor....
Gotta agree with The Fixer - the financial advantage is nil unless you buy used gear. But, choosing your own components and assembling it yourself is huge on the personal satisfaction meter. Especially if you are a deal hound and want something unique.
Plus, building it yourself gives you the knowledge and confidence to fix it yourself - another big plus.

Zero financial advantage....
Well, yes, in the long run, but................
Take me, for example :) : I want a super bike, but I haven't got $5000 at the moment to spend on an awesome bike, but I could scrape together a couple of grand. So, I'm gunna blow my cash on a great frame, then worry about the other components MUCH, MUCH later, and in the mean time ride around with a super frame equiped with "oldish" Ultegra.
