Great Lakes - 4th Annual BFNIC Spring Classic

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
WHAT: Open invitation to a ride for anyone who reads this post, and their friends. Riding your vintage bike is highly encouraged but all bikes and riders are welcome.
Please note, this ride will be divided into A and B groups. This is a no drop ride but there is no SAG support.
WHEN: April 24, 2010. Start times are as follows;
West loop – meet at 7:30, start ride at 8:00 am.
East loop, A riders – meet at 10:00, start ride at 10:30 am.
East loop, B riders – meet at 10:30, start ride at 11:00 am.
WHERE: Village Park parking lot in New Glarus, WI.
Map of Village parking lot http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&source=hp&ie=UTF8&q=Village+Park+New+Glarus,+WI&fb=1&gl=us&ei=ioylS76RMoiUtQPF7vDzBw&ved=0CBIQpQY&view=map&geocode=FeFUjQIdpkqo-g&split=0&hq=&hnear=Village+Park,+New+Glarus,+Green,+Wisconsin+53574&ll=42.816748,-89.634104&spn=0.045835,0.090723&z=14&iwloc=A
FORMAT: This ride will have two groups, an A and B.
All will start the West Loop at 8:00 am. They will ride a 50 km route ending back at the starting point. The faster A group will start the East Loop at 10:30 am. They will ride a 50 km route ending back at the starting point. The B group will start the East Loop at 11:00 am. They will ride a shorter 25 km route ending back at the starting point. Riders can decide which speed/distance is best for them. It is quite hilly, 39/27 gearing is recommended.
Cue sheets, A riders http://www.h3odesign.com/BFNIC_A_Loops.pdf
Cue sheets, B riders http://www.h3odesign.com/BFNIC_B_Loops.pdf
No-Drop rule for both legs (could effect start times but probably won’t – just be flexible). Faster riders will be allowed to ride at their own speed, but a sweep rider will be available for slower riders.
Only moral support is provided. You must provide your own fluid/food for the ride. There are optional stops on both legs. The idea is that you bring your own and leave it in your car. Each time we return to the car you will then stock up for the next 50 km ride.
Cue-sheets and maps will be provided. No road markings, but some of us know the route pretty well.
Currently we have no mechanical SAG support. If someone could bring a spouse or friend to help fill that role – it would be great!
WHY: This is meant as a social ride. It is an opportunity for Bike Forums members, friends and acquaintances to get together and meet, and ride together in a group. It is also meant as an opportunity for riders to challenge themselves in a “safe environment”. If you have never ridden a Metric before you will be surrounded by a lot of riders that have that can lend you support.
Feel free to bring non-BF riders as well, but remember this is not an “organized event”. This is simply a large group ride.
Please spread the word to anyone else you think might be interested.

My daughter has a birthday party later in the day but I'll still make it. It's a spa party so I'm not needed in the early phases. ;)

I believe that would be the Sugar River Trail!
Seriously, the thinking on the fact that the second loop for the B riders is shorter is because they (we...) will start later and be slower, thus all ending with the A group at roughly the same time?
Can we have a B roll call?

Here are the routes on mapmyride.com. Hopefully others can use them as I'm horrible at following a cue sheet and would rather let my 705 tell me when to turn...

Looks good to me. A small thing at the start of the west loop. There is a bike trail next to 69 so you don't have to ride on 69. It really makes no difference but I thought i would point it out.
Wiswell - I'm B, or B-, depending. :)
Who else is in???
I am doing a warm-up loop tomorrow out to Union and stopping at The Crotch of the Dog for lunch. If anyone is interested, I'll be at the Crystal Lake Main Beach parking lot from 9-9:30. I have posted this in C&V so there will be some old-timers on old bikes. Don't worry, they're nice.

Voldemort-Yes, I'm in.:ride:
I always deam of being in the "A" group... and then I end up in nevernever land between "A" and "B". Maybe this will be the year I'm smart enough to start with the "B" group (but I doubt it).:D

The ten-day is almost never right. The fronts seem to always move in either faster or slower, but almost never exactly as predicted. I NEVER bank on a ten-day forecast being accurate (and right now I'm crossing my fingers that I haven't cursed us).

I may be cursed vis a vis this group ride. Last week I hugged a tree down at the Kettles and took a handlebar to my quad just above the knee. I've made my schedule available for this ride. But... considering the injury I may not be able to join.

Since the current forecast shows ~50F and 60% chance of rain for Sat., are we still going to do the ride if those conditions prevail?
Because then I really have to pack a big bag of HTFU to get through that ride.

But it's not a ra....
oh.
If I can score a bike I'll go. Mine got mangled in an accident last Wednesday. Here is hoping I get the ins check from the driver and that I can make up my mind quickly.

So, if we really do get rained out, there are these options the following weekend (yes, each costs $...$ for autism, and $ for animal shelters) which are both in SW Wisconsin. Just a thought. Or we could just who could do a rain-postponed version that weekend.

So it's not looking like I'll get the insurance check in time so I won't have a bike in time. Anyone have a 52-54 cm they can loan me for the ride? :D

I assume both of those will be hitting some of the same roads as the fall Wright Stuff Century in which case they are very good choices, especially since they are put on by Stew.
A less hilly but still with some challenging hills is the Bombay Ride for May 2. It starts fairly close to Capitol Brewery as well.
http://bombaybicycle.org/wp-content/uploads//2010-Ride-Schedule.pdf
There is also a new restaurant in Madison that you BFNICers might enjoy that is also in the same vicinity as the Bombay Club Ride.

Forecast high of 70 degrees, 40% chance of rain. I'm sure not riding with the four out of ten of who will get rained on.
Or do we just avoid the rainy 40% of the route?

Well... now the rain is up to 60% with T-Storms... and 70% the night before. With up to 1/2" of rainfall over the two periods.
