Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - they do exist...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

i was walking around campus yesterday, and saw a guy riding a nice looking light blue track bike with bullhorns. even though i wasn't riding at the time, this was the highlight of my day. i still haven't seen anyone riding fixed or even single speed in my hometown, but i just moved to school a few days ago and it was nice to see that someone around here also rides a fixie...

Well, it'd have made more sense if I could have done all caps. Forum software apparently undid that.

Not now, but I grew up in Charlotte. I used to mtn bike in the woods around UNCC. Pretty cool whoop-de-doos out there if you are into that sort of thing.
I'm not surprised by the lack of fixed gears. UNCC is/was built in the middle of nowhere on the outskirts of Charlotte. This was in the 60s when everyone drove a car ("see the USA in your Chevrolet.."). UNCC is ringed by US Hwy 29 to the North and Hwy 49 to the South and neither is bike friendly. If anyone rides to school it's from their apartment to the school and back. Grocery stores are on the major highways.
Sorry, it's a great school and you'll do well there. Elementary and secondary schools here in my town are the same. They don't build schools downtown or in the neighborhoods anymore. They stick them out on a highway and make it damn near impossible to get to on a bicycle. No wonder our kids are fat and lazy.

yeah, it's definitely not bike friendly at all here. i wish i could ride to the grocery or book stores, but even though they're within theoretical riding or walking distance, they're on seriously busy roads or highways. it seems like i'll only get to ride during the few short trips i make around campus...

If you can make it over to Back Creek Church Rd, about a mile North of campus off Hwy 49, you may find some good riding. It's been a while, but that was once considered "country" and not many vehicles. Mallard Creek Church Rd going toward Derita is fair for riding too.
Hey, my mom has a condo for rent very near UNCC if you are interested! If so, PM me! We're sort of desperate for a renter.
