Saturday I took a ride up GMR to Baldy Village. It was the first time I've made the trip. When I was a couple of miles outside of the Village on the way up; I saw a green pickup on the side of the road that said "Fire" on the side. A little ways further I saw a guy looking over the side with binoculars. I said to myself "OH OH, I know what that means." I stopped and talked to the guy, and he showed me where he spotted a blue fender a couple of hundred feet down a very steep drop off. He said that he had seen skid marks nearby, and decided to take a look. He mentioned that he had called it in, and that they might be sending THE WORLD up to him. I said that I would check in on the way back from the Village.
Well, I now know what he meant by THE WORLD. A CHP unit was rolling in right after I left the scene. As I turned onto Baldy road I saw a large fire truck turn onto GRR. After fueling up; I headed back. The first thing that I noticed was a large helicopter settled in on a bluff over the road. Then I saw many, many emergency vehicles. There were fire trucks of every description, there were Forest Service fire trucks with maybe prisoners inside?, there were huge wreckers like you would see towing a semi truck, and even a private ambulance up there on that narrow road. There was barely room for a bike to pass. All the trucks were going to have to leave in reverse order from how they arrived. There must have been one hundred public service employees standing around talking to each other.
I guess I thought they would throw a rope down the side and go down and check things out. HA! Maybe they would have done that in 1950, but not today.
So I rode back down to Glendora, passing some more units that were still headed to the scene. Then I climbed GMR back to the shack to get 8200 feet of climbing in for the day.
Oh...you guessed it. There was only an old fender down there. Nobody was knew how long it had been down there. If they haven't mapped these things out, they may have another convention over the same fender next year.
