Mountain Biking - why is the Hardrock SS more expensive?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Why is the Hardrock SS more expensive than the Hardrock XC when the SS only has, well, one speed while the others have a multitude of gears? wouldn't the multigears be better (more versatility, etc...)

Its got disc brakes, better fork, better crankset, etc... singlespeeds are where its at.

So because it has better components, so the SS viewed as a 'trade-off'?

singlespeeds are where its at.

what do you mean by this?

I can't stand riding my geared bike now. Its become a wall ornament. Its hard to believe I like a 25lbs singlespeed bike built for under $20 more than my $1630 XC hardtail. But I do.

heh, nice to hear but what makes you like your $20 fixie so much more?

fixed gear is different than a singlespeed. With a fixed gear the gear is attached directly to the hub and the cranks move with the rear wheel. With a singlespeed it still has a freehub which allows it to pedal backwards or be stagnant without effecting the motion of the wheel

so what's makes you guys like the fixed gear or SS so much?

Simplicity, one gear, straight chainline, no need to worry about what gear you're in because there is only one. Cleaner look to the bikes, lighter weight, less stuff to break....etc.

Oh yeah, the ride in incredibly quiet. It's amazing how noisy my geared bike is.

I want to make a djer ss...but really I can't see me having a trail bike ss...I don't have that kind of power/endurance.

Dirtjumper and cross-country, respectively.

what does 'djer' and XC mean?

FR = FreeRide (Heavy duty bikes built for taking big hits and riding HARD)
DJ = Dirt Jump (thus djer, is dirt jumper)
XC = Cross Country(majority of Current Mountain bikes)
CX = Cyclocross (specific bike that looks like a road bike with knobby tires)
DH = DownHill (specifically for racing, going as fast as possible)
4x = Four Cross or Supercross. This is a four person race on a groomed track downhill. Think a BMX track for mtn bikes.
Urban = Riding in Metropolitain or Downtown areas, jumping stairs, hopping benches, dropping off loading docks and landscape planters...etc.

When you made a list of riding styles and abreviations it made me think... what does bmx stand for. I know what riding style bmx is but what does it stand for.

Basically I never have to adjust my singlespeed, it never misshifts, it can get all crapped up with mud and sand and still works fine, there are no shift cables to replace, no shifters to break, no derailleur hanger to bend, etc etc. And since I have all of $20 into it I really don't care what happens to it, though I would miss it more than my geared bike.
