I picked up a black c. ‘84 Shogun 300 at a good price the other day as a fixer upper, to flip.

The bike has a double-butted Tange 900 Cr Mo frame and fork, along with a high quality headset, handlebars and stem. It also has nice Araya rims, and Shimano hubs, brakes and DRs.

On the other hand, it has stem shifters, turkey wings, and a NUTTED rear axle.

Q1 - Does anyone know who built Shoguns?
Q2 - What do you s’pose it might be worth all cleaned up, with new rubber, housings, saddle, chain, and bar tape?
Q3- Is it worth my while adding DT shifters and a QR axle to improve its sales prospects?

A2- $125-175
A3 - No; Some buyers actually prefer those things and you will never recover your cost

Tange 900 is not bad. It was the lowest grade Tange tubing available then, evolution of Champion 5. Shogun 300 were mid entry bikes. Think of it as a Schwinn Le Tour.

+1 For some reason, buyers in this price range like the stem shifters. Ditto the turkey levers.

This bike fully rehabbed would bring $150 around here. Once you get around the $200 mark, stem shifters become a negative, as well as the nutted rear axle.

Thanks. I just had a hard time assessing the value, because the frame seems so unusually good for any bike with a nutted axle and turkey bars: (Thats' why I considered replacing them, but I see now it is very improbable I'd make up that additional cost.)

I had that frame but mine was damaged and I gave it away to another BF member. Like you, I was impressed with the quality of the tubing for an entry level bike. Shogun and Lotus tended to have very nice entry level frames for that era. Both used the Tange, double butted chromoly steel main tubes. If you flip it, I'd play up the Tange tubing, that works well for me around here.
