Commuting - I'm feeling all fuzzy! She's still around!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

For once, the story has a happy ending. In the thread about why there seem to be so few female bike commuters, I made the following observation:

I remember one female commuter I used to meet occasionally. She was quite enjoying it up until schoolies' week last year. I rode with here on the Thursday evening of that particular week (which is more like a fortnight these days), she described the whole experience that week as "absolutely horrible". I haven't seen her since. I really think all those 45 year old "teenagers" yelling, flashing and doing God only knows what else put her and numerous other females off.

Lo and behold, who do I happen to see on my ride home from work this evening? Must be nearly 10 months since I last saw her, but she's still there, and still apparently riding just about everyday. Apparently she's changed her working hours, which is why we haven't met for so long. I'd been seriously worried that the treatment she received during Schoolies' week last year would have scared her off forever.

When I first met her I told her about lane-claiming when the situation demands it (i.e. the southern end of the Esplanade in Surfers), today she told me that what I said was extremely helpful, reassuring, and that she's passed it on to so many other people. It's moments like this that make it all worth it, for all the doubters out there who give us all the usual guff (i.e "you're gonna die! etc etc" -- including, sadly, some at the Bicycle Gold Coast meeting this evening), there are still those who are willing to give it a go and find out for themselves. There is still hope.

That warm fuzzy feeling could be an indication of heart failure, have that checked out.

There are ways around that...

Chris,
There's just one thing left to do ...CHANGE YOUR HOURS...and don't worry about A Trollie she's never around anyway! ;)

I was waiting for those replies! To be honest, I'm not so sure either of us are interested in hooking up. Believe it or not, there are actually single males out there who don't mind having female friends. I think the warm fuzzy feeling had to do with the fact that someone actually gave me some informed, positive feedback for a change (rather than the uninformed "I won't even attempt that" replies I normally get on this subject).

Having said that, it's not like me to get so worried about someone complaining about Schoolies' week either (it's not as if those complaints are unusual). So I guess the answer here is a big, spanky, two-paragraph, "I don't know".

Schoolies week is when thousands of students celebrate the end of high school. It started in Surfers Paradise and is now emulated around the country, I believe Americans have been doing this for years. Also the legal drinking age is 18, so there are a lot of really p*ssed kids vomiting everywhere.

CHEERS.

Just to elaborate a little further on Mark's comment above. They all tend to converge on Surfers Paradise (which I have to commute through) from pretty much all over the country, however, it's not so much the kids as the 40 year-old-mid-life-crisis hangers on that cause all the problems. Put it this way, it's not unusual for any given night (often more often than not) to attract 100+ arrests. Of those arrested, at least 80 will be over the age of 35.

Hopefully that gives some indication of why I so often refer to "45 year old teenagers in utes" with such disdain.

Geez, and this was supposed to be a good news thread!

Ah my counter part has also turned up. At first I parked next to his bike for about 6 months and wondered who it was. Finally I found out it was a heavier sort of Englishman who worked in my bldg.

After my bike was stolen, I didn't see him and my project has since moved on the other end of campus....3 months?

So this morning He pulls out from his street about 2 miles before we arrive at work. About 30 lbs lighter! We pedaled about 2miles and then he turned off to go to the other end of the campus. Nice guy. Nothing fancy on the bike except these mondo head mirrors.
