When I mention GMR, this is the second section of the ride. GMR is Glendora Mtn Rd and GRR is Glendora Ridge Rd.
GMR is 8 miles but this pic is GRR which is the second section of 13 miles, 21 total with 5,000 ft of climbing. One of our fun rides.
At times I feel like a lion or some other animal is following and stalking me from above the high ridges beside the road as I ride. I'm not the only one that gets that feeling while riding this road as others have mentioned it. Kind of spooky as you ride and small rocks tumble down the sides traveling in the same direction I ride!
Well, I get the feeling that something is watching me. I guess I can relax now knowing that it's probably those pesky skiers!:p
I've never seen this view. Hillbasher took these pics from the top of Thunder Mountain, wherever that is!:p...He skis up on MT Baldy so he snapped a couple of pics overlooking GRR!
I've never seen this view!
Nice shots!:thumb:
On the road, I feel like we are at the top as we hit the 5,000'ish ft level. The pics are form 7000 +. Now I know!

You say that now!:D.....if you had a chance to climb it once, you'd be back!;) I try to take riders up all the time but too many won't try. It aint that tough if you just take your time. I've seen riders take up picnic baskets and have a good time!:thumb:

I get nervous driving through mountain roads (on vacation, none near here). I'm getting dizzy and queasy even looking at those pictures! :(
Seriously, phobias aside, that looks like fun!

That looks like a sweet climb! Almost makes me want to pack up the bike and head for the left coast. Thanks for sharing the pics and video.
Maybe, bigfoot is stalking you on your way up and tossing the little pebbles down to mess with your mind :D

Used to live in Denver as a kid. I remember the grandeur of the Rocky mountains still. I imagine if given the chance, I'd give it a shot just to see those views in person. Breathtaking!

I've never had the desire to do the ski lifts on this ride. Ive heard andknow of too amny riders eatinng it on the SHARP! STEEP! turns. Not for me!
I'm more ascared of them than I am of Bigfoot!:roflmao2:
We've done forum rides wher som of the guys have snapped carbon bars (after a crash and ok'd by the shop) hitting largecracks in the road and a few others going down in the turns, not for me! One guy luckily found a free ride in a taxi that happened to be driving by after an incident.:D

Looks like a pretty tough climb! The descent looks fun. What kind of speeds are you hitting on the descent? I didn't spot any cars in the video... not a lot of traffic? or was it just the time of day?

Weekday mornings are pretty car free, maybe 5 or 6 vehicles. Surprisingly no crotchrockets as there are usually a few in the mornings. Weekends are different, first 4 miles are infested with thrillseekers!:D
We rode 8 miles up, then down and backup 5 miles on another section, so the 13 miles of climbing was average 6%, good but not too tough.
Downhill speeds are 30-35 mph around the swithcbacks. One straight section, last clip in video is a 1/4-1/2 mile straight where I hit 42 'ish. Some guys claim 52 on that strip but uhhhhhhh.................ok! :p

Those do look awesome!:thumb:.. and Hillbasher is looking exceptionally sporty on that Scatterini.
I was hoping to get out on Skyline this weekend, but a cold front came through and we're back in the 40's/50's.... I'm staying flatlands until it's at least 60!!! yup, I'm being a wussy.

Gina has done the 8 mile climb about 6 or 7 times and SHE IS NOT A CLIMBER! She did do 16 miles of the full 21 mile climb twice. I've offered to take up several first timers at a fun pace but most won't try. :(

You know Beanz, you're having too much fun with these pics. :) Here's a pick of one of my training rides. It only has 3000ft of elevation gain but it's all in 5 miles! Yeah, those are 15-20% grades.

Looks like it's in a nice area, but I don't think I could make it up that road without walking..it seems to take so long to become fit enough to do strenuous hills like that :(

03-26-10, 11:09 PM
Don't tell anyone but, I walked part of it the first time I did it. :)
btw, it is a really nice area but I can't tell you exactly where it is or I'd have to kill you. We like to keep our roads as car free as possible...;)

There are plenty of hills around here, bumps really, that I walked the first time I attempted them. Stupid short little things, like a quarter mile at 8%. Now, they aren't anything special. We have some roads that are that kind of steep(such as can be found here (http://lowkeyhillclimbs.com/2009/week6/)) around here, and maybe someday I will be fit enough (and my knees tolerant of the idea) to do them, but not now. For me, cycling fitness has been a long and slow build-up, seems like it will take years to do things that I don't think are physically possible for me to do at the moment.

You'd be surprised! I used to think a one mile 5% was impossible. Just getting used to the hills and knowing they arent going to kill you makes a big difference in surviving a climb. I used to panic, A hill! A hill!", then one day I relaxed and just made my way up. That was the key! History since then!:D
I don't use a Garmin or really pay too much attention to the grades. Hillbasher uses a Garmin and calls out the grades while we climb. Last week it was 8%, 9%, 12%, back down to 10%" all the while I wouldn't have noticed if he hadn't called them out. I would have thought everything was 6%.:D That was our ride to Crystal Lake last week.
I was tricked into riding up a 22% grade once, with a standard double (39/25). It was tough but I made it. Don't believe your friends when they say, "oh, it's going to be an ez ride"
Homey's pic, I like it and I'd try it just cause it looks purty but in reality, I rarely look for stuff that's real steep as many of the organized rides I would do don't have 20% grades that last for more than a few yards, if any at all. I like the long consistent climbs to get into shape.

I'm thinking that the area near Los Oso, OSos (??). I drove my parents through PR 2 weeks ago. Somewhere along the 101 heading towards the coast, we saw some pretty big hills and lots of riders parked along the sides. more MTB's though. Sure looked nice there!

You didn't even call and say hi! That road is actually close to PR on the old road to Cambria. The big climbs are all between PR and the coast.
