You're probably better off posting this to the Classic & Vintage forum: top-mount Shimano XT thumbshifters haven't been made since the early '90's. I have a set, but I'm using them.
If you want to convert a newer 8- or 9-speed bike to top-mount shifters, you need Paul Thumbies mounts: http://www.paulcomp.com/thumbshifters.html and a set of Shimano bar-end shifters: http://www.universalcycles.com/shopping/product_details.php?id=4515&category=162
