I currently have 26 x 1.75 but the other day I was at a bike shop and saw a pair of Ritchey Tom slicks and the width was 1.50 and they also had another brand at 1.40. What I was wondering was, how low can I go? Can I get away with a 1.0? and if I can get them on my rim, how would the ride be??? How much of a difference would it be if I kept the same size 1.75 and went with a completley slick tire? in terms of speed would it be faster.

I just put some IRC Metros (1.5) on my ride. I have noticed a 1 or 2 mph increase over the 1.95s I had. The ride is a little more harsh because the psi is about 30 or 40 pounds more than the 1.95. More info can be found at Sheldon Brown's site: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html#width

I've gone between 1.0s and 2.0s on the same rims without a problem but if you've a wide section rim it'd be worth checking with your LBS or one of the tech forums that a 1.0 wouldn't be a problem for you.

Map tester's ride about the feel of the ride being a bit harsher but I kind of like it being that little bit more responsive

I got MANY pinch flats going to 1.0 inch wide, I threw them away recently, was wasting time and money with new tubes. 1.5 inch is as narrow as I'll go for commuting, works fine.

RichardW is right on. It's a rim width issue. Us Map tester's linke to see what will fit. Then keep them pumped up or or you will get the snakebits that kf5nd that talks about.

Cheers

Thanks everyone. I think I will stick with the 1.4's or 1.5's for now.
