I'm getting an entry level road bike. The local shop has a brand new (never been used) 2003 Trek Alpha 1200 and a 2004 Giant OCR3. Both came factory and put together by the same guy with the identical shimano parts. The Trek is on sale for exactly the same price as the Giant OCR3 and both bikes fit my size the same. How would you choose?

I would get the Trek because it looks cooler. I don't like compact geometry. The sloping top tube looks like a girls bike. :)

I had a similar choice and chose the Giant. Felt good. Looked good. Quality the same for the purpose of casual riding. Look at 'em both. Ride 'em both. You'll know quickly which one appeals to you the most.
