Ford SUV crushed in altercation with cyclist

CHICAGO, Ill.

Chicago police arrested the driver of a Ford SUV after a road rage altercation with a cyclist resulted in the complete destruction of his vehicle on Thursday afternoon, police said.

Arrested was K.N. Speed, 47, driver of a blue, 1998 Ford Expedition. The incident happened around 4:30p.m., near E. McClurg Ct. and E Illinois St., in the North Water Street area.

Cyclist Joesph "T.A." Alivio was riding westbound when K.N. Speed came up on his left, honking. Speed gave him the bird and attempted to run him off the road, screaming obscenities.

"He pointed at my bike," Alivio said, "screamed for me to get on the sidewalk, flipped me off, and gave a one finger salute."

But it didn't end there.

Alivio, who attempted to ride away down E Illinois said, "I looked in the rear view mirror, and this same SUV was speeding, flying up behind me. It was at that point that I feared for my life."

Alivio said he applied his alpha-cyclist stare, and smashed his rear wheel over the roof of the SUV. He then put his bike in the small chainring to crush the roof until it collapsed.

Police say K.N. Speed is charged with felony reckless endangerment in the incident, and will probably get off with a slap on the wrist anyway.

I don't understand? Who hit who, how did he get his rear wheel onto the SUV? What does the smallest chain ring have to do with anything? Is the "alpha-cyclist stare" trademarked?

Latest reports say that Alivio was able to bunny-hop the SUV by using his well-honed, urban cycling skills, and that the outer ring worked better then the inner to cut the roof into shards.

I don't believe the "alpha-cyclist stare" is trademarked, but I believe it is illegal in three states, along with "dramatic chipmunk."

Preemptive strike.

P.S.: Bonus points if you know what happened at E. McClurg & Illinois.

I knew a guy that totaled a car with his bike. T-boned it and landed on the roof. He was famous for such disasters, he also took out a large plate glass window on a store by leaning on it while sitting on his bike.

What was he running into? Lancias?

He ran a stop sign at the bottom of a hill. His Paramount survived IIRC. He had Hi-E rims, which took the brunt of the collision because they were just one step up in thickness from Reynolds wrap.

Nope. One of the fellows on the local cycling forum came very close.

He says they were on a "mission from God." (Big clue there - should be enough to figure it out).
