17.5 miles on the 'ol bike trail this afternoon and there must've been a gnat swarm every 100 yards. I hope they're high in fiber or something because I think I swallowed 2 or 3 hundred of the little buggers.

before the developers covered my favorite mountain bike route with houses, there used to be a little creek in a canyon between two plateaus. It was always a challenge to ride down in there, make the crossing and get up the other side. in spring and summer, the creek was infested with clouds of gnats, so thick they looked like steam. The little bastrids would clog your nose and mouth, and enough of them would bite or sting or whatever they do that about 10 minutes after I rode through them, I'd get a sort of sick-allergic feeling and a faint rash and have to sit out for awhile.

Not fiber, but- protein on the go!

Bugs are everywhere this season. Ton of gnats on the trail and HUGE flies on mtn rides. I myself have no problem with the gnats but I have to wear bug spray on mtn roads. Those are some mean bugs up there! They follow you and taunt you and it's impossible to outrun them at 8 mph.

I make videos of my rides and the mountain videos show some of the big flies stalking the lens!:D

During gnat season I always pray that I don't have a mechanical. One time, on the ridge, my chain broke- requiring 5-10 minutes of letting the gnats feast on me in order to get rolling again.

Biting gnats? Don't think we have those around these parts.
