I have to get another computer after a crash I had the other day. Removed some skon from my elbows/left knee but otherwise OK - the computer, however, is trashed.

Truth is, I had a Sports Instruments SI-90 wirelss one and I wasn't 100% happy with it. It would be Ok up to abut 20mph, then it wouldn't register properly.

Any recommendations out there?

It's actually not bad with the exception of the horrible battery cover design, only thing missing is a cadence function.

Best I've used in the cheap categorie is the Specialized Sport at $22.99... heavier guage wire and a good clean installation is pretty easy. I have a wired and wireless now and both have been VERY reliable.

I use a Planet Bike 5.0, nothing fancy only has the bascis but works fine, with large numbers making it easier for these 50 plus eyes to see.

I love my Shimano flight deck. I have the wireless version. The best part is that the buttons to change the display are built in the brake/shifters. Makes it really easy to use. I can do intervals hit the stop watch and go without moving my hand off the bars. Also it shows what gear your in, never thought I would use that but it is great.

Cheers

Another vote for the Planet Bike. I've got the v8 (didn't see a need to know the temperature with the v9) on my Fat Tired Rider. Really like the "everything at a glance" setup. Picked it up on EBay for $15.

I've also been happy with the CatEye Velo 2's which outfit a couple of my rides.

I love my new Cateye wireless CD300 (w/cadence). I think next year when I get my new bike I'll spring for the model that has cadence and HR in one unit.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is cadence and why is it so popular?

It is the revolutions per minute of the crank (your feet). 80 - 100 RPM is about normal for a road riders.

I've checked out various online calcluators and the number it comes up with seems to jive with the one on the computer. Of course it doesn't take into account hills, coasting, wind etc. I input my weight as 115lb. But I usually carry a bag or something that's another 6-8lb.

I just installed a Sigma Sport 1200 and like it so far. It looks great, very minimal design and was inexpensive to boot.

Got the CatEye Astrale 8 (w/ cadence) from Supergo in Santa Monica for $24.95. Just ask them to match Bike Nashbar's internet price and bring a printout of the webpage. http://tinyurl.com/5dhyw

I recently dumped my Planet bike protege 9.0' with temperature because it died everytime it got wet. It also was very stingy on average speed for some reason (in comparison to other computers I have had). Anyway, I am trying an Echo F-2 right now and am pretty happy with it. Will see how happy I am after the next rain storm. It is supposed to be very waterproof.

Most low-endy (say, sub-$25) cyclo-computers work just fine and are more or less equivalent. When you get above that, you're mostly paying for features like wireless and/or cadence. Or maybe a big display with lots of info. Personally, it's mainly a matter of getting the functions I like. In addition to mph and odometer, a trip meter and ride time are a must, and I really like a current speed above/below ride average indicator and 2 wheel size option (I switch between tires a lot).

Aside from that, the mounting and pickup HW is the determinant. I just got a cheap-o Sigma that mounts using (primarily) heavy duty rubber bands. I no like. I have a Cat-eye Mity-3, which I like pretty well, but the pickup is this long protrusion that just sticks out asking for something to bust it off. Which eventually happened and I had to replace it.
