"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Dent in side of Jet 9

I posted this over in the Tri forum as well but figured I would have better luck with the road racers. I have a slight yet "dent" in the side of my Jet 9 front in the cover. I think it occured when I had the tires mounted the other day but didnt notice it until yesterday. Anyone else have any experience with this happening? Hopefully there is a quick way to pop it out. Aluminum clincher rim? The cover is not structural. No experience fixing it, but I'd think a 2" suction cup would be a best first shot (maybe like one from a car window Garfield or something).

I'm tempted to move the thread to the road forum, but I do think you're unlikely to have as many people with similar experiences over there...

I've done similar (and worse) to mine. Usually you can flex it by hand, or the suction cup method might be worth a try.

Tried flexing it and got another one out, this one wont seem to pop out.

I wonder if this is really going to affect the drag.

it's a dimple.

it makes the wheel more aero.

Try some tape before a suction cup.

Called HED and got an answer. Tire pressure it too high and is deforming the rim ever so slightly. Since the HED rims are 23mm wide you can run tire pressure at 95psi and get the same effects of higher pressures but at a much more supple ride. So in other words "lower your tire pressure". Great customer service, phone rang twice, human being picked up, answered the question and was off the phone in under 30 seconds.

So did lowering the pressure fix the dimple?

I imagine you could take off a spoke and push it from the inside out. That's a bit more involved though.

for real funzies you could drill a small hole, pull it out with a screw and put some of the tape over it that's for disc cover valves.


There is no reason on earth to do this, but if it was a car, it'd be a start.
