Classic and Vintage Bicycles: What's it Worth? Appraisals and Inquiries - 21" Melton Touring Bike

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'm considering buying this bike - not sure what year, but I know the bike is something special and that Melton was a great frame builder.
It looks like it might have some very slight rust, but nothing too troubling.
I'd very much appreciate it if folks could tell me what they think it would be worth paying.
Thanks!

I saw that one on ebay. It looks like a great bike and should bring a decent bid. I had a Melton frame set that I sold for 350.00 alone... It is a huge regret actually, it was top notch.

If it flies under the radar, you could maybe get it for the price of the frameset, IMO. Especially as the components don't appear to be anything special (assuming that's a Duopar Eco and not the Ti version in the back). Melton is a very fine builder who built many of the upper level "Huffy" bikes out of a special section of the Huffy plant (other "Huffy" pro bikes were of course built by Serotta for 7-Eleven). But Melton is not necessarily very widely known and his frames are probably under-appreciated. Personally, I wouldn't bid over $400 or so for that bike, but I could see going higher if you're really in love with the frame.
If you are local, it could be a good deal. It has insane shipping ($150), which tends to discourage bidding. +1 Melton is under appreciated.
A good touring bike like this one is well worth $400 to $500 delivered.

This is an old thread but my Melton touring bike could be the twin of this one; it is a 22 inch frame though and the parts mix is, of course, different. My bike has a pretty similar pump peg. It is a great riding bike and I am looking forward to building it up again:
