Advocacy & Safety - Royal Mail (UK) Claims Cyclists Exposed to Greater Risks

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The Royal Mail is set to phase out bicycles. Although the reasons for doing so have shifted from "modernisation" to "health and safety" it is suggested that the ability to deliver heavier loads may be the real one. In any event the current reason advanced is that cycling is more dangerous than other forms of transport:

In a letter to the Labour peer Lord Berkeley – which was read out in a House of Lords debate on 29 March – the outgoing chief executive said that bicycles "posed a wider safety risk associated with British street networks where the rider is exposed to greater risks than other vehicle users."

I always knew the british government was 'off its' rocker' when I lived there in the 1970's, now this proves it.

I'm guessing the Royal Mail has it's own statistics on how it's carriers are affected by motorists... i guess everybody's postage fees are going up and delivery times are dropping!
