sweatpants?
wind pants?
tights?
shorts? underwear or just the lined running shorts?

This is a no brainer answer...wear whatever you feel comfortable in.

I agree with travelmama. Also, it depends where I run. If I'm home, I'll have no problem running around town in my trishorts. However, when I'm at school during the year, I would be laughed at if I ran in them, so I usually put a pair of regular shorts on over them. If I had my bike with me it would be a different story since I'd do bricks most of the time and I refuse to ride in baggy shorts anymore

I dont wear underwear at all, I run in spandex or tri shorts with another pair of light weight shorts over them, prevents chaffing and rubbing.
Cotton underwear is the devil.

I agree. I just bought 10 pair of underarmour boxer briefs and compression shorts, love them and some lacrosse shorts or running shorts on top of them so I dont scare the neighbors

I don't understand why you wear underarmour briefs and compression shorts with lacrosse shorts over them!
There is nothing better and more comfortable for running than running shorts with liners.
What's your purpose?

man, you needed to take out a bank loan for that purchase

If I'm doing a brick workout I'll usually run in my bike shorts, maybe pull on some baggy shorts over them. Just running depends on the weather, run shorts 60 and up. For cooler temps and I'll wear compression shorts under baggy shorts (keeps the hamstrings warmer). Really cold, below freezing, and I'll put on wind pants and layer under them as needed.

Yeah, I've never been able to bring myself to pull the trigger on an Underarmour purchase.

I like the support the briefs give me and I dont chaffe at all while I wear them. I just find them more comfortable
as to the price: I dont think they are any more costly than other workout gear. I have had under armour t-shirts for a few years that get washed once or twice a week and have held together great.

Thanks. I apologize for the tone of my question. I didn't mean it like that. I was just curious.

No problem, I am not that smart so I didnt catch any negative tone.
Regular running shorts, unless it's a brick, in which case I wear my trishorts.

Running shorts with a brief type liner, short and split, in warm season. Tights or similar pants that fit close and move easily for cool season.
I don't see the purpose of wearing a jock, compression shorts, bike shorts and then some sort of loose fitting baggies over that?

When warm: tri short and singlet (same as a race)
When cold: semi fitting tights and a semi fitting long sleeve jersey. Tight winter clothes get too uncomfortable for me on runs over 45-60 minutes, but I don't want them flapping in the wind either.

Just modesty in my case. So embarrassing to have a pack of women following me ;)

I wear a pair of compression shorts with a pair of baggy shorts over them. up top under 5 miles just a cotton tee. over 5 miles a compression top below a cotton tee. I'm a fat ass so I don't need to be showing it off too much. During races I have been known to go down to the comp top or no top. on a truly scary note i ran a half marathon in october, it was mid 30's 30MPH wind and pouring. I froze. My wife met me at the finish line, i asked if she had the car, she said she did. I made a b line for it got my clothes. i started to strip, my wife made a comment about my stripping. I said I have spandex on, she relented. I then realized that the spandex compression shorts were white, and they tell no lies when soaked. I chuckled and sped up the change.
When I run (or hit the elliptical machine) I wear, outside of the obvious shoe choice, tri shorts (as they are the most comfortable thing I've ever worn to stop chafing between my abnormally large thighs) with gym shorts over them and a polyester shirt to 'wick' the sweat away...
If it's colder I put on an under armor compression long sleeved shirt on and maybe some tight leggings if I'm feeling weak (which is more days then not.)

Running shorts with liners = Gross
Just way too much bouncing around down there getting all kinds of out of place! I found one pair of nike running shorts with a liner i absolutely love though, longer length and like a mesh material outter and mesh sewn in boxer briefs inner, amazing! Other types of solid material running shorts with liners are just plain nasty...so i either run in that one pair of shorts or basketball/gym shorts with spandex under, dri-fit / technical shirt, new balance shoes, and feetures (http://www.feeturesbrand.com/)socks...and my forerunner 405!!

been using my trisuit but find I have to unzip the top to midchest because it restricts my ability to inflate my lungs. I guess I have big lungs. once when I was in my late 20s I had a chest xray and the technician had a hard time getting all of my lungs on the film. anyway - I wear other clothes over the suit but find wearing it helps me run for some reason. I guess wearing the compressive unisuit makes me feel more athletic for some reason. I can really feel my muscles such as in my hips and legs articulate. I feel quite strong in it.
Jockey makes boxer briefs in the non cotton material (I dont' know what it's called). Kinda like spandex but a little more breathable and not quite as tight. Still snug. I wear those and gym shorts over. Here's a link to what I'm talking about (http://www.amazon.com/Jockey-Sport-Performance-Athletic-Midway/dp/B003BNGWTG/ref=sr_1_23?ie=UTF8&s=apparel&qlEnable=1&qid=1273772346&sr=1-23). I don't chafe with these
