I ate 20 minutes before the ride, I drank less than usual (still a fair amount) before the ride, drank as much as usual during the ride, I warmed up properly... Yet after 12 km's / 24 minutes I had stomach cramps and had to stop. I ate a chocolate bar, walked around, got back on the bike for some slow spinning, and I rode back home at a speed of 31 km/h (pretty good for me, as I was at 30 km/h before the cramps).

Is this normal? What can I do to avoid the cramping? And why did it stop so soon (must have taken only a 10 minute break before pushing hard again)?

Any advice / suggestions would be much appreciated.

Not sure, but because it stopped so suddenly it may have just been a gas bubble or a pinch in the intestines that finally gave way? I can get cramps by running too soon after eating. Cycling usually doesn't present that problem because your stomach isn't jiggling around so much as when you are running.
