Folding Bikes - "Citizen's" Folding Bike 6-Speed: Any good?

So, is this any kind of a good bike?

I know nothing about folders and the relative pecking order of one brand/model over another. That said.... is this anything worth looking into? Would it support a 6-2, 220, body? It might be fun to take on business trips. I see folders pop up locally on a fairly regular basis for $75-100; one of these days I'll pull the trigger.

Well I don't own a Citizen Bike, but I don't believe the bike in the ad is one. It looks to me like a generic folding bike, and the seller might be calling it a Citizen Bike just like we call all nose tissue "Kleenex" if you know what I mean.

To get back on main topic, there are a number of Citizen Bike owners on this forum, and I would listen to their opinions about this brand. As I stated earlier, I don't own one so I won't comment on the bikes.

Good catch. The sale even has a link to Citizenbike.com and the bike for sale is clearly different than that.

A friend of mine just picked up a Raleigh folder with a 1977 SA AW hub, in near mint condition, for $75 on CL locally.

I don't believe it's a Citizen bike. I have a 6-speed Tokyo. My folder has held up well and it travels well. For peace of mind, you might consider buying new as CB prices are very competitive and, no worries if its stolen or lost.

It certainly isn't a Citizen Tokyo, at least not one of recent vintage. It does look like a similar 16" folder. At 6'2", I would say to stay away from any 16" folder - I'm 5'6" and my Tokyo fits me fine, but I wouldn't be comfortable on it if I were much taller. Try a 20" folder, like a Citizen Miami, Gotham, or Gotham II. Gothams are nice because they are lighter weight than the steel Miami and Tokyo, but steel has an advantage in strength.

Nice to see you posting again "PawsonBikes"! Did you do that tour of the Florida Keys on your CitizenBike Miami? And just to be on topic, how did your Miami perform on that trip?

Wasn't able to do my trip, had to postpone is as my Mom got sick & I became her primary caretaker, moved to be with her, so now I am being a hometown tourist in this new county. Using my citizen to explore! Day trips mainly. Still performing great, just took it into the LBS just to make sure everything was ok (it felt fine to me) and indeed everything ok. Just added a doggie trailer to be able to take both dogs at the same time. Love it!

Pawson, thats just about the coolest bike setup I have seen! Humm, since my much loved and petite Border Collie, Lady, loves to kayak with me and has hiked dozens of our N. California trails, the doggie trailer is a great idea as I don't/can't let her run next to my bike as it's unsafe. She would definitely want the convertible version though..ha. I have been looking at the Citizen bikes..so tempting and perfect for my many trips into San Francisco.

They love the ride! Thanks for your wishes for my Mom! The girls (my Pomeranians) Maya weighs 6lbs and Diamond weighs 3.5lbs. They love to go for a ride and this is a light weight trailer (22 lbs), it has the tethers inside to keep them safe and they can't jump out if the front of the trailer is open. I have to say, for my first foldable the Miami Citizen has been perfect, and yes I am hooked on foldables (my touring bike unfortunately is in the corner collecting dust).

that is a good deal, if it is a Raleigh 20. the Raleigh 20s are sought after classics, even they don't fold very compactly

Yes they do own me! But I have to say they are awsome, they are both certified therapy dogs & dog scouts & love to participate in just about any activity! As far as the gear I am very happy with my Citizen & love the doggie ride! I have gotten a year of enjoyment out of it, and look forward to more adventures on it!
