I don't give this much thought any more, but it just occurred to me that tomorrow marks 33 years since I quite smoking. I figure if I can make it to 35, I'll pretty much have the old devil weed licked.

Oddly enough, driving was not the time I missed it most. For the first year or more, I could not linger for a second coffee after dinner, I'd have to get up and go or the urge would be too strong.
Oh yeah, and congratulations on your success as well.

FWIW, lots of former tobacco fields in NC have been converted to vineyards......from one vice to another!!

It is 29 years for me. I used to have bad dreams that I relapsed. Coffee in the morning was the most closely linked association. I could still enjoy lighting up with a cuppa.

Smoke-out day last November marked 30 years for me. I can't believe I ever did that.

My uncle Ray is 79, he quit smoking when he joined a church at age 26. I asked him a couple of years ago if he ever thought about smoking. He said, "Every single day."

I quit in 1973 (mostly) but actually had my absolute last cigarette in 1976. Probably got in 3 pack-years, all told.

Dec. 28, 2001, was the last day I inhaled a cigarette. I keep hoping my extended family would quit, too -- they're stinking up the house.

Can't stand the smell of those damned things. Even if it's not 'totally fresh', I am a fresh-air freak -- my bedroom window is open 360 days a year, the fan in it 355. I could comfortably live with a 3-season porch as my living area.

The day will come when I am alone in the house -- and that day will be the first day of smoke-free in that house, for the duration of my stay in it.

I am DONE with that filthy habit.

My dad quit when I was little, probably 1963 or so, when someone visited who wanted to smoke, it was simple, the smoking section was outside, by the end of the driveway. I never started. I have a hard time understanding why people still do.

Kudos to you Dan and all others who have kicked the habit. It's been over 3 decades for me too.

Eight years last month. I still have an occasional nightmare that I have started again. I know I never will, the stinky things disgust me.

I quit smoking on December 28, 1960.

Forty seven years later I had a particularly harrowing and frustrating day at work and thought "A cigarette would sure taste good now." That nicotine monster is cunning, baffling, powerful - and patient.

Always a silver lining - I stopped when I broke my leg, Oct 30th last year.

No smoking in the hospital.

T'was never a big habit - 1 or 2 a day, after the work day was done, after 8 in the evening alongside a beer. For decades, even as a 3.20 marathoner. But it was a habit all the same - I'd walk a mile in the rain to get one if I'd run out.
