My daughter is wanting to have a go at track.

This involves a 150 mile drive, so first I am going to set up one of my old track bikes for her to try out.

I was going to do it 48/18, but then I had a twinge of memory that there were limits on what gear juniors could use.

Is that so, and what are those?

48 x 18 is plenty low gearing. The USAC rulebook limits juniors on the track to 48 x 17 for 10-12 year olds, 48 x 16 for 13-14 year olds and 48 x 15 for 15-16 year olds. There are no track gear restrictions for older juniors.
