John,
That was actually nicely done. Even though you tried to tip me off, I spent most of my ride to work wondering which Illinois Races were going to get nixed, and why somebody from Belgium would come here for a 70 mile road race.
As for the real schedule, the rumors of Arlington and Elgin being gone seem to be true (unless one of them is taking the place of that TBD). Looks like a good schedule to me, though.
With Elk Grove/Chicago/Downers all likely dead, Evanston could very well be the highlight of my year.

Well, "back in the day" (Oh no, here we go again) **** used to fly guys over from Europe to race here. He'd have guest housing arranged and suppose only have to pay their tickets (or part?). I barely recall that when he was riding a lot himself, he'd take them out for social rides in the area. I was 17 or 18 at the time and can barely remember who was racing then. I do know that Festina was over here one year and KICKED A**. I was going to school over at UW-Milwaukee, hanging around the area a lot in the Summer and seeing the whole Festina B Team riding up Lake Drive. How cool!! More recently some Euro stud was here and flat out asked if he was 'juicing'. Response: "What? For this?" Meaning Superweek but certainly had the connotations that he wasn't beyond that behavior. Well, just like last year when they had the South African MTN team here. I love that foreign flavor that Superweek has always had. Man, I'll have to wrack my brain to remember who all rode here. Marcel Wust. Lance Armstrong of course back in '96 when he was prepping for the Atlanta Oly's. The Heidens, Lemond when he was 15. All those dude's raced here at one time or another.

I don't doubt any of that. I actually enjoyed watching MTN pack their dudes like sardines in that SUV and steal all the American money (especially since they were so lowly budgeted that they WERE racing for lunch money). But I think that, even to a lower-level Belgian team, a flat, low-wind (probably), warm, cobble-less 70 ride would be a warm-up! Call it 140 miles, and now you're talking!
I'm thinking that Superweek could see a fairly deep talent pool this year. I know that Bahati wanted to come last year... so maybe we'll see part of his team? Possibly a couple more guys from Jelly Belly? Who knows. It should be fun.
PS- I'm almost hoping that TOAD steals all of the Wisconsin Superweek venues... I don't think superweek would have much problem operating as a mostly-Illinois series. No problem at all!

I drove over to Cudahy at noon to get my groceries, haven't been over there in a while and that gave me a chance to scope out the new criterium course they will have during Superweek. While the official course map hasn't been published yet, it could be very cool. The S/F line will be on 'main street' in Cudahy for the first time ever, passing in front of a new bike shop that features a museum of old bikes the owner has. It's an old blue collar type of 'downtown', kind of like Racine, or Blue Island. The rest of the course will (probably) go by the Patrick Cudahy World Headquarters with wide streets and new concrete pavement. There may be a 'kink' on the back straight, so it wouldn't be a simple 4 corner rectangle. The course is only a mile from the Lake Front so there is lots of room to warm up, lots of parking, and it's always 'cooler near the lake'. Should be good.

Just found out that 10speed Services will be at the Collegiate Nationals in Madison next month. That's the company that did the announcing and course set up at last year's ToAD and Superweek. Am trying to find out if they will be back this year for both series. IMO, they are the *BEST*. Better than what I saw at Downers Grove, or Nature Valley GP in MSP.

Not much racing banter on here since Leland. It's about 42 days to TOAD. Am I the only one excited? What are the rest of you folks planning?
I was originally planning for TOAD to be my last harrah as a 4, but it looks like that might not happen. So, I'm not going to pre-reg for anything, but...
I'm currently looking to do Road America, Waterloo, Fon du Lac on consecutive days, and possibly Waukesha (but I'll probably opt to be searching for that stupid plane in the UP again on that day). I've been to Road America a million times, so I've got a decent idea what's going to happen there. Any of you cheeseheads have any survival tips for a fat guy from the flatlands on the other races?

Suffer like you've never suffered before.
I never did ride Road America, but I think that's a tough course by bike.
Hopefully it will be cool so you're not slipping around on the rubberized tar.
The Waukesha course is all ripped up right now.
City sez "no worries!". Promoter sez "I have a plan B just in case" although
nobody knows what that is. :innocent:

Twas just looking at the pre-registered riders for ToAD: http://www.sportsbaseonline.com/events/tools/registered-athletes/index.xhtml?categoryId=22557&conversationId=389858
The road races are filling faster than the crits, but still not a ton of registrations yet.
I'm getting more and more concerned that that first Saturday's TBD won't get filled in. Looking at the schedule and that of years past, I have to believe they're looking for something in the Chicago area. If that gets filled in with anything not-too-hilly, I'm probably in for that Saturday, Evanston, and possibly Downer. Or, Palatine, Evanston, Downer. Or just Evanston.
I'm assuming Palos is going to be hilly. But that's just my assumption. And I'm assuming that because the only info sheet posted is the one from last year. I suppose I'm also assuming that Downer Ave. is even going to let slobs like me race there this year.
I have a lot of assumptions.
I was also going to try and swing hitting the Nationwide race at Road America the same day as I do the Grafton in TOAD, but the times don't work out. So, I'll be skipping Grafton!

There was something on Facebook about that date, but I can't find it now. They said definitely not Elgin, but they had something in the works, so they'll probably get something in there.
I just noticed, however, that Sunday July 11 is blank. NO Palos Hills.
Right now, the first weekend is EMPTY!!

Where'd you get that from? Palos was on there earlier today!
I know Blue Island wasn't a favorite course of some, but I don't see why they couldn't go back there. There are plenty of other "regular" local spots that I'm sure could be used in a pinch, too. I know they love the downtown locations but any crit is better than no crit.

I wouldn't hold my breath for Superweek. I have no faith in anything those boys say. Take for instance the 4/5 race at Whitefish Bay last year when were standing on the starting line for over 45 minutes and Andy Garrison was promising more primes than we could handle as it was the last day and they had "a lot" of stuff to give away, including merchandise, free pizza from a local shop, and cash. There were ZERO primes for that race.
Couple that with his speech how the lower category races were appreciated for their support of the series, yet the registration people and other workers for the company are less than friendly, even at the beginning of the series.
I could go on and on about Superweek and it's lacking-ness....guess that's why I'm on my team's committee for the ToAD race. Hmm.
Already got the upgrade covered! ;)

Your gripes are well founded, I can't fault anyone for that, yet there have always been problems at Superweek and you've got to expect that with 2 weeks of racing (give or take) there will be more. Riders, officials, and the general public have always had gripes about this or that back as far as anyone can remember, leading to various nicknames that aren't new: Stupor Week, Stupid Week, etc. Yet you got to hand it to them for pulling it off year after year (since 1969). For example, just having the Lake Front Long Course last year, on a Wednesday no less, was fantastic. No one raced that course since Nationals in 1985! The Kenosha Criterium is still a huge success, and there are new courses this year that have never seen bike racing before, such as Cudahy (not on this course), Lake Geneva, and South Milwaukee. So, hang with the hard times, there's still plenty to enjoy and give 'em time to pull it together. We still have 3 weeks until ToAD, then another a couple weeks after that to Superweek. (Yeah, I've always been more of a 'glass half full' kind of guy :D ).

Yea. Stupid Week for sure. I told myself at the end last year I was going to boycott as a result, but....dammit. There's no other races on the days I have off of work....ugh such a debacle. I really am not sure how they do it year after year, with iritating the riders with bouncing paychecks, etc., and not paying their bills to the municipalites in a timely manner....come on now Speedster, positive thinking, positive thinking.....
I'll be doing all of the ToAD as I took off from work from June 11 until June 30!! Heading down to Iowa this weekend as well!! Now that's some positive stuff right there!

I'm planning on doing all of TOAD again, and most of superweek. I probably won't be in good shape until superweek since all of spring was a bust. Hopefully everybody else is slow for superweek and I can get my 2's upgrade after just missing it last year.

I don't hate superweek. Despite my griping, I hate to see it end and look forward to it's return every year. Despite the numerous, reported glitches, I think those guys do a pretty decent job.
We're pretty spoiled here. We had a guy come from SoCal and spend the summer riding and racing with our team last year. He couldn't believe the consistent intensity of races week-after-week-after-week. He also said that the money up for grabs is a lot higher her.
And, seriously, where (on the planet) can a Cat 4 race for 10 straight days, take a less-than-two-week rest, and then race almost every day for 2 more weeks? My biggest complaint with superweek is that I can't get enough of it. Despite it's blatant preference for Cheeseland.
Having said that, Coach just asked for a list of races I'd like to do the "second half" of the season. Parts of July weren't exactly easy to schedule...

05-27-10, 05:17 PM
I'm waiting for Chicago to come up with a series of it's own. There's definitely enough racers so support it, just look a the 'cross season. Last year Superweek was split just about 50/50 WI/IL like it didn't know which way to go, but now with the first weekend bare for now, maybe it will be coming home again. The midwest is such a hot bed of racing it's not funny. It has six velodromes, two major series, and if you're willing to drive a few hours, your choice of two, three, or four different races on some weekends. I was talking to Tyson Beck at Whitnall this spring (he races Masters 3/4) and he said that he raced 60+ times last season. Some days doing 3 races. Today's news that the Tour of Missouri will not be held this year just proves how resilient SW is by lasting 30+ years. Major props. Speaking of ToAD (weren't we?), guess who's the 'official photographer' this year? :D I also just ordered some new glass this morning, so you better wash that team kit for your next victory. :)

Was talking with people today. ToAD registration way up. (looked real slow early on). Bahati Foundation should be riding ToAD as well as Superweek.
Bong and a Half TT this morning had a real good turn out. The Iowa State Track Champs at Kenosha Velodrome was sparsely attended, but everybody was having a good time, while the first annual Burlington Classic Criterium was really sparsely attended which is a shame because RDS Productions did a great job of putting that one together. Full report later at Peloton Star. :)

RDS puts on nice events. He really does. At Vernon Hills, I got cash, a gift certificate for pizza, a little medal, and a podium interview from Kenny Labbe. Pretty cool! The problem is, he's a bit old school... like, until the ICA forced him to bikereg there was no pre-registration. The promotions before the event could use a little more intensity. Plus, two of his events this year (Wonder Lake, and Burlington) are on weekends were there's already no shortage of events (and, Wonder Lake put itself right on the weekend that Winfield had been for several years... thankfully the folks at ABR moved that to August). But, even with that "slow growth" model a couple of his races (Vernon, Fox River Grove) are turning into solid early season races. I could see Wonder Lake getting there as well.
If anything, his last couple of races have suffered from too much area racing... we have it good.
Send me any info you learn about that meeting.
Will do. I don't want to jinx anything, but I was talking to one of the guys who went to the meeting last week. He's since sent out some emails to folks in town. The news sounds mostly positive.

The RDS Burlington race was wayyy short on racers. It was fun, but because there were mostly 3's geargrinder was able to destroy us and ride away with first and second.
In other news I'm pre=reg'd for all of ToAD in the 3's and as a team we're hoping to win the overall one more time.

Oh, you're just sore because you were the youngest 'kid' in the race. :D
Heh, boy did they put the HURT on you guys! :roflmao2:

I sure got worked over. I'm pretty sure I spent about half the race alone just waiting to get lapped for the 4th time. Oh well.
