Where can I get the parts?There are friction stem mounts in the QBP that could be ordered thru LBS,or you could scavenge a pair off a thrift store bike. You could use barends that mount in the ends of the bars. www.loosescrews.com has the barends I think or try ebay. Both the shimano and suntour index types also have a friction mode. You will also need cables and casing.

Personally, I detest stem-mounted shifters.
What is the objective of your proposed "upgrade"? If you want a system which will work well while allowing you to keep both hands on the handlebars, I strongly recommend barcons, particularly the old SunTour ratchet type, if you can find some. (I have happily used a set on my UO-8 for the past year or so.)

I think that the easiest and cheapest way is to use bar end shifters. They come with a friction shifting option so you don't have to worry about compatability issues.
What they don't normally come with is down tube cable stops which you will need. Fortunately, every set of aftermarket STI levers comes with a set of cable stops. Consequently, most bike shops have a drawer full of them. If they like you, you might be able to pick them up gratis.

Has anyone ever had their knees hit the barcons when climbing standing?It can happen, depending on bar width,drop length and rider leg length, and bad form.. I usually shorten the drops a bit with a pipe cutter,to help get them out of the way.

I've heard people say they have but I find it almost impossible to do. I have bar ends on my cross bike and they work great.

I have them on my moustache bars and I do hit them occasionally, but I still love them.

its just cause I was gonna do that with an this older bike that I had...I made it a fixie instead...
