Unfortunately, I think predictions like this are overly optimistic. Battery technology just isn't there yet and I don't expect things to improve for at least a decade, if then. Hybrids may continue to be popular, but a 100 percent, large 4-wheel EV will remain out of the price range for the average person and still have limited traveling range, making them more suitable for suburban errands not road trips. (If environmental legislation is enacted that raises electrical rates significantly, the love of plugging in rather than filling up at the pump may diminish.) Let's be honest, too. Although a true EV may not emit particulates and Carbon Dioxide, the power plants that generate the electricity to recharge their batteries generally do. Until the US catches up with parts of the EU that have invested heavily in nuclear power plants (France comes to mind immediately), most of our electrical power plants will be powered by coal. (Hence the danger of electrical rates going up significantly if legislation is enacted penalizing the use of coal-powered plants.)

Every few years a story like this pops up. Always five years away.
