Tandem Cycling - Price for new Trek T1000?

My wife and I are looking into getting our first tandem. Our local bike shop has in stock a new 2009 Trek T1000 they're asking $2600. I don't see info on T1000 tandems for 2009 on the Trek website and the information for 2008 doesn't show the pricing. Is this pricing in line?
We're there changes from 2008 to 2009, or did they just carry ove rthe same bike and specs?

My wife and I are both very experienced cyclists , we both currently ride Trek Madone 5.2s and ride about 4000 miles per year. We're looking to use the tandem for occasional use.

Trek dropped the T1000/T2000 after 2008, somewhat by omission. In other words, tandems were apparently not a priority and Trek failed to renegotiate a contract with the 3rd party US firm that it had building its T1000/T2000 frames or something like that. Darn shame too: great tandem for the money, especially the T2000.

Anyway, I digress....

If they are selling it as a new tandem with full warranty even MSRP would be asking too much for a two-year old tandem; guess that's why they still have it sitting there.

A KHS Tandemania Milano at $1,750 is almost comparable to the T1000 in terms of components, with the Trek getting a bump for a better frame and dealer support. I'm not even sure that would make we drop more than $2k on the Trek, assuming it fit, the color was OK, it had the right handlebars and really was a 2008 model: again, there were no 2009 or 2010 Trek T1000/T2000s.

Your local dealer is mistaken. There were no T-1000 or T-2000 bikes for 2009. He may have bought it from existing old stock in `09, (hence the misconception), but it's an `08.

BikePedia (http://www.bikepedia.com/quickbike/BikeSpecs.aspx?Year=2008&Brand=Trek&Model=T+1000&Type=bike) says suggested retail in `08 was only $2419, and now it's technically two years old. Still a good bike though, but maybe you should offer $2000?

Update, we bought the Trek!
Our dealer bought it in Feb 2009 as a "carryover model". Meaning it was basically a 2008 still left in Trek's stock. Trek sold off the remaining T1000 and T2000 in 2009.
We test rode the bike and it was a great fit and the ride was much better than I anticipated. On our test ride I even hit every pothole and road imperfection I could find and asked my wife's (stoker) opinion, of course I warned her before hitting any bumps. She was impressed with how smooth the ride was none of the bumps bothered her at all.
The bike shop we bought it from is only a mile from our home so we were willing to pay a little extra for that convenience. Plus they had our size, I had searched and the few I could find were on the other side of the country and also small size or the large size and we needed the medium size. We paid $2200.

I just ordered an Arai drum brake, got one of the last ones that Precision Tandems had in stock. Since the Arai drum is discontinued I wanted to get one installed while I could still find one.

Congratulations! Sounds like you negotiated a fair deal and got the most important part right! The fit! Welcome to the tandem community.

P.S. - Hitting every bump is NOT the way to endear your stoker to you! :lol:
