Foo - Woops... forgot to mail in tax payment... now what?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
OK, I forgot, my bad and all that. But now what? mail it in next week when I get paid? Am I going to jail? Should I call somebody?

I used tax service, they e-filed. I owe uncle sam around 50 bucks (yeah, that close). Tax guy gave me a form to mail in with my check. I forgot to send it.
I am a total noob when it comes to Federal Tax Law. Back in my native island we don't have that nuisance. Ergo, I really hope that DancesWithGolf is correct and I still have till the 15th.

Yes you do have until the 15th. Just have to get another form to accompany the check now.
Uh, you guys all missed it -- part of the new health care bill is that offenses like this are now punishable by CANING.

The gov't is mailing me a check in the form of an EFT into my account.
I always make sure I have enough withheld that I don't pay federal or state income tax.

What kind of income do you make off those funds while in government hands?

Hardly the point. The government needs help. Poor people need health insurance.

why are americans so frightened of the irs? if it is late don't you just get a fine for being late. government agencies are just adminitrations and follow rules rigidly. they don't have any axe to grind or any personal vendetta. unless you are al capone of course.

I agree. All of my contact with the IRS over the years has been positive. Everyone I've spoken with is willing to help me pay what I owe and have been willing to work with me to resolve the issue.

if i'm late, i know i'm getting a £100 fine. I don't get angry or scared or argue about it. it is there in black and white. nothing personal and my own fault. that's about it.
i get more emotional about parking tickets which are unreasonable, random and vindictive.

Actually, your case will be reviewed by Sarah Palin's imaginary Death Panel.
I highly recommend that you use this situation as an opportunity to protest the govt's intrusion into our personal lives. If I were you I would not pay any taxes ever again.
Now I should and will pay my taxes. I do not want to go to jail or be fined.

I got my state refund in less than a week and my federal refund in 10 days. But I filed back in February.

And in any case, you don't go to jail for non-payment or late payment...jail is for lying about what and whether you owe, not for failure to pay what you admit you owe.

I had some friends who messed up and owed taxes they could not pay (at least not right away). The IRS was very reasonable about a payment schedule, the state of California was not.

That amendment was BARELY voted down when Boehner was out for a pee break....

Back when I was a youngster I had a bit of a problem with the IRS and NYS because I started a business and said how much I thought I would make, so they billed accordingly when I didn't file. To say I was scared is an understatement. I eventually ended up sending an email to them saying I made nothing and please close the tax number. They did so, very nicely I might add.
Generally speaking, I have found IRS one of the better organizations to deal with when you screw up.

The lady at the post office says our Hawaii state tax refunds are delayed until august.
I'll get the real scoop from my cpa when we meet for first quarter stuff in April, but it's fair to say our state is taking serious gas.
Chicago level corruption. Sad news is that they are hacking away at education.
