Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. How many of you believe that the world is running low on oil. (Its a pretty simple "I do" "I don't" question so please don't make this P&R.) :)

Is the world leaking? Someone should go put a drip pan under it or something.

I don't think it really matters. I believe that the people will eventually wean themselves of their dependence on oil before oil even comes close to running out.

When was the last time someone changed the Earth's oil for that matter? Its definitely been longer than 3000 miles/3 months...

Thats what I think, but I also think that it does matter, and it will not happen long before we come close to running out. I think we'll run out long before we come up with anything close to what we think we need.

People aren't motivated to get off oil because it's cheap now. But once the supply starts getting low, price will eventually get so high that they have to find alternatives if they're going to do what they want.
It's not so much running out, but the inablility of production to keep up with demand. Prices WILL rise. Quite a bit. And in the not too distant future.

Because, as the price of oil goes up, so do my investments :D

+1. We'll make a half-ass effort to get off oil until then.

The process of finding alternatives probably wont be pleasant, either. I doubt it'll be a gradual shift off petroleum, but it'll be a scramble for something better.

Who knows, but we're consuming a resource faster than it's being replenished. When that happens, the supply shrinks. It's pretty simple math.

we've reached peak oil so we're on our way down, but still have plenty left. If we didn't, we'd have a lot more going on that just a couple of gulf wars.

Ditto mustang1, and no doom and gloom from me either. I think its likely oil will become much more expensive gradually over a period of decades. Alternatives will make more economic sense, and thus gain investment dollars in those technologies over time. No worries.
Anxiously awaiting my fusion powered flying car.

Does your supermarket have their supplies delivered by bicycle?

Yes. Does yours? If not, they're sure behind the times. How do they get it delivered? By horse and carriage?

Don't forget carbon fiber.
Plus, based on the taste and texture, I'm pretty sure the part of PowerBars that isn't cardboard is some derivative of the bituminous portions of crude that are too thick or impure to use as asphalt.
Do I think it's running low? That's kind of a loosely defined question, so I'll make my loosely-considered answer: not quite yet.
When banks start refusing to grant 5 year car loans on gasoline cars.... but until then....

Where were you the last two years? Banks won't refuse car loans simply because oil is too expensive. They'll just loan you the money, package this type of loans into some sort of derivative and sell the entire stinking mess to some poor sob for a profit.

I was not thinking of "expensive", but rather "not available"... thinking that if I default and they reposes, they'll have a useless pile of junk they won't be able to sell @ bank auction. But I know nothin' bout nothin'.

No. Its an ideological position either way. Getting very tired of junk science and people using either "science" or "religion" to justify their ideological positions.

Awesome. So am I. Saw Hot Tub Time Machine tonight. Hilarious, and if you were a young adult/teen in the 80s I think you'll really enjoy it.

I have been considering moving to a more bicycle friendly city for some time now, but I have decided to stay put because I have read that global peak is near. If we do end up in global peak oil, I believe more people will be bicycling as a necessity. I don't think this nation is prepared to face peak oil, I'm not either. Only thing I can do is try and make rational decisions based on the notion that peak oil is around the corner.

Unfortunately, it appears too many people don't know what "junk science" actually is. Too many people think science is "junk" if it doesn't agree with their ideological positions. It doesn't matter if the science is sound or not, as long as people disagree with it, it's "junk."
