In the market for a new weedeater I don't feel like dragging around the power cord anymore.

^^^ Runs on gas alone or gas+oil? batteries perhaps?
Old was curved, new is straight. I think I prefer curved, but had the old one for ten years. The new one for a month.
I'll only answer, yer Honor, that with the best of my knowledge ... I'm not sure which one you are talking about, or indeed if I even have one.

But is true that the battery powered "innies" usually don't have a shaft... women love them tho.

I just use a knife. A scary sharp blade and a quick hand takes care of anything unwanted.

If you got away with an electric before, just about anything will work.
If you're cutting more than blades of grass, get a geared with a straight shaft and a sawblade. Husqvarna makes a great wacker.
I didn't know they made curved ones.
I didn't know they made curved ones.
They make curved ones, angled ones, ones for all types of, erm, weeds. :D Blasted weeds!

Actually mine is straight with a cord. Started using it in 77 at my mom's house and been using it once or twice a week ever since....I guess it's a C&V....
I am now re-evaluating this thread for content and am thinking I was in the wrong place at the wrong time < clicks red shoes > I want to go home .... :)

How interesting!
Well, I did some looking around last night and this morning. I came across cordless electrics that I might end up. The gas models that are in my budget don't have a sling, and I 'm afraid that I'll burn my arm on the motor housing. And I don't know when/where we'll end up moving to next- might not even need the weed eater. Found a propane powered one which I liked, but I ain't paying 2 Benji's on it. Still have to check Sears/Home Depot/Lowe's, though.

Any of those stores will have them on display so you can pick them up and see how they feel and check for potential proximity to the exhaust. If you were ok with an electric before, you're probably not doing enough trimming, or needing a big enough trimmer for a sling to do much for you.
Also, straight shaft trimmers are generally the higher horsepower ones and have gear coupling in the head. The flexible driveline in the curved shaft trimmers helps make them less expensive.
Ah, string trimmers. Right up there with leaf blowers on the "want to punch the inventor" list.
Want to punch the inventor of, or want to punch people who use them at inconsiderate times?

Mine was strait till I started putting it places it didn't belong, so now it has a slight curve to the right
I had a straight one for years. Ended up having to pull it too many times to get it going so ended up with a curved unit.
Bought a 25cc with a curved shaft. Was a refurb unit, and my "helper for the day" (step-daughter) grabbed one without an owner's manual. Gotta see if I can find one online.

Oh! almost missed that one!
Seriously, get one that has the option of fitting a snow blower head, assuming you live where there is snow sometimes.
