Foo - How to find a good barber...

I'm thinking that I'll treat myself to a proper barber shave before the wedding but I'm not sure how to find a good barber. Is it just the luck of the draw or is there some resource I can use?

If you have a good bit of time, call around, find who does shaves, and go try each one out.

You are a braver man than I. My barber does use a straight blade to trim up after cutting my hair, it is the part I hate the most! :eek: Do not like the experience of someone with a straight razor near my throat. :eek:

As long as the razor is going up instead of across your ok. You didn't forget to tip one day, did you? :)
This is as close to a spa experience that most guys will get. There is something to be said about the hot towel and just leaning back in the chair and relaxing. I would recommend a straight razor shave to everyone.

Yeah, I know how to use a razor - I am not a spring chicken after all. :lol: I just want it to be me that holds the knife.

Extremely difficult to find a good barber on the first try. No on-line resource to my knowledge, you have to call or stop in and ask. Ask if they have barbering education. One good differentiator is to ask how they do "thinning", that is, reduce hair mass for persons with lots of heavy bushy hair. If they use scissors or thinning shears they've been to beauty school, if they use a razor they've been to barber school. If this is a once in a lifetime event and you are near a big city, then try the most expensive hotel in town, they'll either have someone on staff or know where to send you.

Just watch out for the barbers with shaky hands.

I am still looking for the barber that only charges two bits for a shave and a haircut.

I read a novel in high school that I can't remember the name of but the main character described sitting in the chair with a razor held to his throat, knowing the barber had the perfect opportunity to slit his throat.

I read it before being of shaving age but it has kept me away from a straight blade shave at the barber shop ever since..

It's really quite simple- you need one of these:

2-3 minutes/day for that fresh look. And less than the cost of a single haircut!

Ask around. I've only gone to barbers because I have a friend who regularly goes and is satisfied. Personally, if it was my wedding and I didn't have a usual barber, I wouldn't want to chance it and I'd go to a nicer salon.
