Mountain - Plains - Awesome new ride - Pikes Peak!

This is the ONLY way to actually ride this road ... otherwise it's closed to bikes.
The road will be closed to cars for this event (which is a great plus)
Registration just opened up ... and will be limited to first 1500 riders...
Could be a sufferfest ... but definitely will be an experience unlike any other ride in CO. Tougher than Mt. Evans, fully supported - and historic.

At $180 a person it better come with a 4 course dinner and a personal masseuse. Sounds like fun but not $180 worth of fun......

Yikes: For $180...
You get to pay extra for parking.
You get to pay extra for a ride back down the mountain.
You get 16 miles of tarmac and 2.5 miles of dirt.

For $80 my event supports cyclists from sun-up to sun-down across nearly 200 miles of terrain. Parking is free. ;)

BTW, Cylcle to the Sun on Maui http://www.cycletothesun.net/ climbs 10,000 feet in 36 miles.

To me, the price of admission is similar to what you might pay (or a lot less) to experience a one time event (Obama inaug, Beatles reunion, playing golf at Masters, having a seat at a Cub game at the World series, etc).

I can ride the roads in Wisconsin any time -- FOR FREE. Over those 200 miles I know I'd see a 7-11 (or 20) where I can buy the drinks/food I need for < 20.

It's not about the price. It's about the opportunity ... and the experience.

To each their own I guess.... I wouldn't pay a penny for any of those "opportunities".....most of them I wouldn't attend if you paid me.

$180 is steep. My guess is most of the cost is in the permit to close the road. Worth it? Meh. I don't think so. You can ride to the top of Mt Evans for just a few bucks. In fact, it's open every year a week early for cyclists before cars are allowed (IIRC)

I also recommend the climb to the top of Mt. Evans. Again. Free. And devoid of traffic if you hit it before they open the gates or after they close them at season's end. Parking at Summit Lake is free. ;)

Here's the event to do on Pikes Peak, the Pikes Peak Marathon. It's 26.2 miles with 7800 ft elevation gain in the 1st 13 miles to the summit, then back down the same trail. The race is not on the PP highway, but on the Barr Trail. http://www.pikespeakmarathon.org/course.htm
