Foo - My poor dog

Jasmine, my dog, is one of my biking buddies. We go on long rides together and I thoroughly enjoy her company but recently she started limping so I took her to the vet. They put her on some medicine but it got worse. I figured her biking days were over even though she's only 7. I took her back for better pain medicine and it turns out it wasn't arthritis after all, she tore her CCL (same thing as ACL in humans). Bad news is she needed surgery to repair it but the good news is that she should be limp free once this heals up. So now she is fresh out of surgery and I feel bad for her but I'm excited that I'll have more time with her as my biking buddy when the weather cools down again this fall.

Animals seem to bounce back much faster after surgery than humans do.

This is good news...I mean bad news that she's hurt but good news that she's on the way to healing. Dogs don't think about wounds and healing like we do. We tend to nurse our injuries but dogs don't. So don't feel sorry for her. She's probably glad that she's home and once she eats and those meds wear out she's going to act normal. You might even be scared for her because she's not going to be as careful as we would if it were us!

My coyote/lab Sooty had 36 stitches in her leg. After surgery she wanted to run around with the other dogs and was antsy that we wouldn't let her. :twitchy:

Glad to hear that she's going to be ok. Did they use kevlar to repair the joint? I had heard that they were now using it on knee tears in dogs. If so she will be better than new, more like the bionic dog.

Ouch, that's an expensive surgery. Your pooch has a great owner!!!! Hope she feels better soon.

My dog currently has the same thing. We just decided to get the surgery. She's only 10 pounds (if she goes on a bike ride with me, she rides), so, for some reason, the surgery is reasonable ($300-ish dollars), but then she has to spend a month with absolutely no jumping. That's going to be a challenge.

Aww. Poor puppy. I hope she makes a complete recovery.

I have a one year old that runs with me daily and it is easily the best part of my day.

I bet it's going to be hard for her to not run for a while. If my dog ever sees me leaving without him, he has a fit.

Thanks everyone for your sympathy and kind words. SHe's doing a lot better than I would be doing for sure! The vet said that only 30% of dogs put any weight on the leg before the 3rd week and she's already putting weight on it on occassion so I'm hoping she'll bounce back really quickly. I was scared to let the 3 other dogs into the room with her. They were so excited to see her though the fence that they crashed through the door when I opened it. But they were pretty gentle with her and sniffed her over pretty good. They were all very happy to be back together! She has to be supervised or confined for the next six weeks. She lives for 2 things, being outside and running...in that order. So these next 6 weeks are going to be tough for her.

The vet said that something about the way her bones are shaped make her prone to having this happen...which also means the other leg will very likely have it happen too. Gotta start saving up for that one now! I was feeling guilty for letting her run so much, thinking that that was the cause but she said that it would have happened even if she never exercised a day in her life. In fact, the fact that she's so active and strong has probably kept it from happening sooner in life and will also help with a faster recovery. So I did the right thing by her after all.

I'm not sure what they used but it came with a lifetime guarantee. If anything goes wrong with it ever, they're go in anf fix it free of charge. Sounds like a good thing to me...but I hope I never have to take them up on it!

My DH's family has been using this vet for over 20 years and he's a great guy...he knows who I am and always asks me about the family whenever I come in...which has been too much lately. He saved Jasmine from an unneccessary surgery when she was a puppy. Another vet was telling us we needed to get her into surgery right away and we took her to him for a second opinion and he told us that there was a medicine that he thought could help. We tried it and it worked! If we had done the surgery, she wouldn't have any intestines and her whole life would have been one medical problem after another (not to mention the costs). Thank goodness for good vets!
