Foo - Gimme a new Guinea!! Pig, that is.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I can't have a pet at the moment (money issues) but would like to discuss what per I would like to have if I could. I currently have 2 fish tanks, one has a beta and the other has several gold fishes. But I want something that my kids could interact with. I don't really like cats due to issues with cat litter boxes. A dog sounds great, but I don't know.
So, I was thinking maybe a cute Guinea Pig could fit the bill. They are small so it won't cost a fortune to maintain. I can put him in his tank/cage/house when I'm tired of him and I can let him loose around the house when I wanna play with him.
Any Guinea Pig owner has some insight as per how good pets they can be?

I wouldn't get one of them long haired rats. They run on them wheels alllllll night looooooooong. Plus if that sucker gets out then it's gonna eat through your walls and poop little pellets every where.

Till it tears up your house and urinates everywhere. It might even bite your daughter in the middle of the night.

and they bite ... with the biggest, nastiest teeth of the rodent world. May I suggest a sweet little lab rat. They make great pets, just don't piss them off.

The biggest surprise I got when I had one as a kid was the whistling.
You know how some sports fans like to give out loud, shrill whistles to cheer their team on?
Now imagine that in your house...in the middle of the night.

You really shouldn't have given him a whistle, dude. That's just common sense.
Had pretty much every kind of rodent there is as a pet at one time or another. Best of all of them is a rat. Seriously. SOOOO much better pet than a guinea pig. Guinea pigs are grumpy little turds that don't care much for people. A rat, obtained young, or handled early and acclimated to being with people makes a great companion that can sit on your lap or shoulder.
144675And, talk about cute! ;)
But, are you saying rats like, those small white lat rats on a high school lab? I need pics
I added a pic to my previous post. Google pet rats and you'll find TONS of pictures, as well as information about them.

Is that Ben?
If so, then you must be Willard?
I used to raise the peruvian (long hair) piggies for show. Had them for several years until the last one passed and it was right around the time I decided I don't do poo anymore. Lovely little social animals but man they are poop machines, but fun little squeakers!

My college roomate's girlfriend gave hime two Guinea pigs as a gift. We kept them in the dorm room. They were the smelliest, meanist, mother******* I've ever seen. He had to put in gloves just to pick them up to clean the cages. FInally he gave those nasty little ***** away.
My advice. Get a snake and feed it Guinea pigs!!!

In South America, in the Andes, they smoke 'em and serve them with beans and rice.

Uhhhhh, no, rice and beans do indeed need refrigeration! Although I know many hispanics that leave them out all night then dig in the next day! I personally will not dig into anything that has been sitting out all night, I also noticed almost all PRicans in PR do this, maybe their stomachs are used to it? Like the indians in the Amazon Rain Forrest, they hunt for meat days away from home, by the time they get back its kinda rancide and they consider this a delicacy!

:notamused: I was refering to the uncooked rice and the canned beans.
But true, my ancestors used to make rice for dinner, leave the "caldero" on the stove all night long and then pack some next morning for lunch at work. They didn't place it on the fridge because this was a pre-microwave era custom. Later generations replaced the caldero with rice makers, learned to use rubbermaid containers, refrigerators, microwaves and trashcans. :thumb:
...to avoid getting the gringos up in arms I won't comment on beef jerky... :D

Or maybe a parakeet? I don't like birds but a friend from high school loved her yellow parakeet "Sara". Sara enjoyed bubble baths and jello.

My daughter moved out this september (freshman in College). She has two Guinea pigs. If you come up to PA, you can have them. And their cage. And their goofy little house.
They have never bitten anyone and are quite docile. They currently have an uneasy truce with the cats. Oh, and they only shriek if you happen to be walking by when they are out of food or water.

We used to vacation there at least twice a year, then it went to once a year, all due to the crime, corruption, and lack of "better" medical care. We stopped going about two years ago when we saw a group of guys stab a tourist to death, they then took his wallet from his dead body right there on the small streets of Old San Juan, cops on almost every corner and they didn't get the guys that did it.
Aww! Being from Peru, it does my heart good to see people learn about the Andean culture. Now get off my lawn! :D

My kids are there, on vacation with their mom.
The Guavate Pork District is also surrounded by a Federal Forest Reserve called Bosque de Carite (http://www.panorama360drna.com/carite1_files/JPEG/Bosque_Carite_2.jpg), with numerous hiking trails (http://assets.eyetour.com/images/p_upload/photos/PATILLAS/CHARCOAZUL/charcoazul0013.jpg), streams (http://assets.eyetour.com/images/p_upload/photos/PATILLAS/CHARCOAZUL/charcoazul0002.jpg) and ponds (http://assets.eyetour.com/images/p_upload/photos/PATILLAS/CHARCOAZUL/charcoazul0004.jpg).

If you liked the Old San Juan atmosphere, come down to FL and visit St Augustine. All the old Spanish architecture, none of the crime and populated by English speaking gringos. They even have a fort, a lot smaller tho, but doesn't smell like pee.

Hey! hey! I'm talkin' Puerto Rican decendants of African slaves that had no choice but to become Puerto Ricans through marriage, through blood. if it wasn't for them our music, our food, our culture (amongst other things) wouldn't be as rich as it is today, and lets not forget our Taino ancesters, if it wasn't for their strenth we wouldn't be here. Spaniards just went to PR and took what wasn't theirs, they also killed off Tainos by the thousands, enslaving them and spreading disease that eventually killed of the Tainos all together, I feel no connection to Spain at all.
^^^ agreed
And Spaniards don't shave, I've been told.
