As long as they can run one of the most commonly used pieces of software on the internet, and you can change the batteries, when they go bad....

The IPad is the first nail in Flash's coffin. The iPad battery will probably outlast the iPad's lifespan, and Apple will not be changing batteries, they will charge you $75 at the Apple Store and hand you a BRAND NEW UNIT if the battery ever fails. That works.

Incorrect. It's the beginning of a new era :D
Apple is a design monopoly but that's because no one else can successfully come up with a great feature/design combination like they can.

Lastly, why does it matter to you so much? If you don't want one, don't buy one. Why the interest in preventing others from buying one?
Some people cannot comprehend why others can emotionally bond with technology that are typically considered to be just tools to get things done :p

Why in the world would Steve Jobs care about PCs... whether tablet, laptop or desktop format???
As for the product failing... we'll see what happens when sales numbers are out from the "mainstream". As for other uses, I can think of dozens of uses for the thing in commercial applications outside medical.
Can you think of any stocks right now that you would advocate AGAINST buying???

Never have, never will.Back in the '80s, AT&T declared that cell-phones are a small dead market and won't ever be profitable. So they decided not to get into that market...
There's plenty of older white people with disposable income who aren't very tech-savvy. And they really listen to this guy: http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20100331/apple-ipad-review. I think a lot of them buy Apple products simply as a thank-you for making them rich beyond imagination (with AAPL that is).
I'm typing this from my store's iPad. It is surprisingly easy to type from. I could type a lengthy email from it with no discomfort.....

The shot caller at Apple sucks, ditto for the shot caller at Toshiba and Lenovo. They all know how powerful remote access is and how all of their techs want it but the shot caller refuses to provide it for only one reason: they don't want to spend the money. Dell has RA. Remote access will cut a 60 minute service call down to 30 minutes. And don't try and tell me Apples don't have mechanical problems. The last time I called Apple tech support I had to wait 20 minutes to talk to a tech they were so backed up. Furthermore, Apple products have a 3-500% markup on price. There are other as-good MP3 players out there. Just go to Amazon, you'll see thousands of reviews for alternative MP3 players. Keep in mind that every day millions of people boot up a computer for the first time and I feel sorry for them if they're using an Apple. Besides being a powerful diagnosing tool, remote access can help flatten out a n00b's learning curve a million times faster there's more to this but I ain't got time to explain all the wonders of that tool...

I'm not going to look up their SEC filings to tell you how much of their business was on the computer side - Macs, iPhone - vs how much was on the consumer appliance side - iPod - vs how much was on the PC software side.
Apple is a design monopoly but that's because no one else can successfully come up with a great feature/design combination like they can.
Correction, no one else can COPY a great design combination like they can.
Almost all successful recent Apple designs are almost identical to Dieter Rams's designs for Braun in the 50s and 60s.

I see similarities in design but not blatant copying of combinations of simple design and software. Apple rarely invents new features in products. What they do is a combination of very simple software and hardware that results in a one of a kind device. What I appreciate about apple is that they actually make an effort to think about how a consumer should be able to interact with a product, without involving profit into it.
Other companies let profit drive their goals and look at what the consumer thinks they want and as a result evolve a complicated product with a mediocre user experience.

Why does Apple succeed? Because they do it better, in many ways. The iPod has sustained 70% + market share after all these years not only through superior hardware and software design, but through the magnetic hold of the entire iTunes ecosystem. The same thing appears to be working with the iPhone. When polled, 90% of iPhone owners think Apple makes the best smart phone vs. <50% of other smart phone owners. Now factor in the substantial investment all these owners have made through software via the App Store and you get a recipe for high customer loyalty. Apple sold 7 million iPhones in the latest quarter, and if they retain 80-90% of those users, those sales will increase for many years.
And that's how the iPad will succeed. So don't worry about whether Apple sold 300K or 500K units the first weekend (an amazing number either way). The iPad will succeed the same way. Because it will offer a better experience than the Slate or any other tablet that follows from competitors. That's what Wall Street thinks. Hence the stock's performance.

The Slate might have options that for some reason everyone thinks the iPad should have but this less about hardware and more about delivering Apps.
Apple has a huge lead in that area and, as pcad mentioned, the magnetic hold of the iTunes ecosystem for one stop shopping.
I own an iPod Mini and tomorrow I will own an iPad. I am hardly a fanboy but this gadget seems like something that will get a lot of use in our household.

That and they've successfully branded themselves to be an outward expression of a White Person's creativity, independence and purity of spirit.

I think you're missing the point. Try telling an Apple fan they have a PC and you're likely to get a decidedly uncool response or, given how rabid they are, possibly even a (mildly) violent response.
Apple doesn't make money on the PC anything... it's all on the Mac... iEverything etc etc.
